PHS Travels To Junction City Friday

Published Wednesday, October 23, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Prescott has now moved up to the number three slot in Class AA.

The Curley Wolves have a 6-1 record overall, and they are 3-1 in the conference. Their only loss, of course, was to the Nashville Scrappers October 4.

The Scrappers remain in the number one slot and Osceola remains number two. Pine Bluff Dollarway, number three until this week in the Arkansas Democrat, suffered its third loss Friday night and moved out of the top ten. Star City defeated the Cardinals with a field goal in the closing seconds. Nashville is also number 10 overall in the state.

Coach Eddie Jackson is hoping the Curley Wolves will continue their winning streak so at least one game (the first) in the state play-offs will be in Prescott. The others, if Nashville remains number one, will be on the road.

This week, however, he is focusing his team only on the Dragons at Junction City.

While the Dragons are no longer in the 7AA Conference and they appear not to be a challenger to the Wolves, the Curley Wolves don't need to look past this week. First things first, and Junction City is next on the list.

Next week the Curley Wolves will begin wrapping up the 7AA Conference with their homecoming against Fouke, one of the new Class AA schools that moved up from Class A this year. The regular season will be closed out the following week when Prescott hosts the Fordyce Redbugs on a Thursday night.

One thing that surprised many people last Friday at Fountain Lake (other than the cliff the fans had to climb), was the rushing statistics the last half for the Curley Wolves. They finished with a minus seven yards the last two periods.

Coach Jackson said he wanted to work on the passing game. Fountain Lake soon caught on and began blitzing. With a couple of inexperienced players off the bench in the offensive line quarterback Al Johnston was sacked three times for a total of 24 yards in losses.

Coach Jackson is constantly training 10th and 11th graders for the following years. Fans never see a score that has been intentionaly run up. When the Wolves go ahead three or four touchdowns, substitutions are made, which gives experience to those who need it -- a constant training program, so to speak.

Sometimes the material is not there, but it's done anyway.

So last week, as in the previous weeks (except for the Nashville game), other members of the Curley Wolf squad were seeing action. They don't do too badly, either. By no means are they the starting squad, but by mixing them with more experenced players, a valuable training session is held.

Here are a few scores from other games Prescott fans may be interested in:

  • Junction City (this week's host to Prescott) lost to Smackover, 31-13;

  • Fouke (here next week for Prescott's homecoming) defeated Hermitage, 41-0, in a non-conference game;

  • Fordyce (here on Thursday, November 7) defeated De Queen, 18-13;

  • Nashville remained undefeated by thrashing Bismarck, 55-22. A little stronger defense next time around for Prescott could give the Curley Wolves a surprise victory over the Scrappers;

  • Gurdon won its second game of the season Friday night, defeating Lewisville, 32-0; and

  • Ashdown lost to Malvern, 41-13.
