Curley Wolves Defeat Cobras, 27-7, In 7AA Football Action

Published Wednesday, October 23, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Prescott Curley Wolves moved their record to six wins and one loss Friday night by defeating the Fountain Lake Cobras, 27-7.

Three of Prescott's touchdowns came in the second quarter when Sam Marlow scored from the four and Carlos Vanhook scored from the two on rushes and C.D. Flemons scored on a 22-yard pass from Al Johnston.

The fourth TD came in the third period after Flemons had intercepted a Cobra pass and ran it back to the two. Marlow ran it in from the one and then Johnston converted a two-point play with a pass to Marlow.

Prescott's defense played one of its best games, sacking the Fountain Lake quarterback eight times for a minus 51 yards. Flemons, Jamie Williams, and brothers Carlos and Brian Vanhook. In addition some outstanding defense in the secondary by Rashad Johnson, Ben Jones, Channing Butler, Al Johnston and Tracy Stafford kept the Cobra offense from effectively working the pass against the Wolves.

The Cobras' defense didn't do too badly, either. They attacked the Prescott passing game with a strong blitz that sacked quarterback Johnston four times for losses that totaled 34 yards. Three of those attacks came in the second half that set Prescott back 24 yards.

Fountain Lake's only score came late in the game when Roy Lee scored from eight yards out. Lee, who was never given the ball until that particular drive, had three runs of 18, 17 and 8.

Carlos Vanhook, who saw very little action the week before, had a terrific game, rushing 11 times for 66 yards. His running in the first quarter set up Prescott's first touchdown.

The score came on Prescott's second possession of the night.

Vanhook got the first call on this drive, which began at the Prescott 41-yard line. Vanhook got 19 and the first down at the Cobras' 40.

He got the second hand-off as well and another first down at the 23.

Again Vanhook got the call and this time gained eight yards, which worked well with a Sam Marlow run next since the Cobras had stopped Marlow on the Curley Wolves' first possession. Marlow gained six yards and got the first down at the Cobras' nine-yard line.

Marlow gained five yards on the next carry to end the quarter. It took four seconds in the second period for Marlow to go the next four yards and the first Prescott TD. Mike Fountain's toe on the point after try found its mark and Prescott led 7-0.

On fourth and two the Cobras punted back to Prescott and once more the Wolves started a scoring drive from their 41-yard line.

Marlow rushed for 13 yards and a first down at the Fountain Lake 46 on the first play.

Vanhook picked up three yards on the next play, then Johnston was stopped for a three-yard loss on an option play.

After a timeout, Johnston connected with Rashad Johnson for a 33-yard gainer at the Cobra 13.

Prescott was then set back five yards when they lined up offsides, but 12 yards was gained by Marlow on the next play. Vanhoock then pushed ahead another yard, and on the third play he gained three for the first down at the Cobra two.

From there Vanhook got the score for Prescott with 6:30 left in the game. Fountain's kick was partially blocked, but the Wolves led 13-0.

Fountain Lake started on their 20 and got a couple of first downs. On fourth and three at the Prescott 31, they were stopped several yards shy by the Prescott defense. The Wolves were 36 yards away from their third TD.

Johnston, running an option play, gained four yards, then he went to Johnson again and got the first down at the Cobra 22.

Flemons out-distanced the Cobra secondary and Johnston hit him at the goal line with a TD pass. Once more Fountain missed the boot, but Prescott led 19-0 with 2:18 left in the half.

Prescott took the kick-off to begin the second half, but the drive was halted at the Fountain Lake 44. On fourth and six Johnson's punt went high in the air, but not a great distance. However, the ball bounced in Prescott's favor and the Cobras took over on their 18.

Getting three first downs, the Cobras appeared to be moving for a successful drive. However, on first down at their 43 Flemons intercepted a Cobra pass around the 40- or 45-yard line for Prescott. Nearly dragged down, he broke loose and wasn't stopped until he got to the goal line. One called for a TD, but was overruled. The officials placed the ball between the one and two.

Vanhook was stopped just shy of the goal line, then Marlow went in for the touchdown.

Coach Jackson decided to go for two points with a pass play. Marlow was wide open and caught the pass from Johnston to increase the score to 27- 0.

Interesting enough, both teams attempted seven fourth down conversions that failed. Prescott tried three times the fourth period as did Fountain Lake. The Cobras also missed in the second quarter.

Other than that Prescott fumbled the ball once to the Cobras; Fountain Lake lost a fumble and had one pass interception.

The game's leading rusher was Vanhook of Prescott, who rushed for 66 yards. Marlow gained 47 on 11 carries.

The Wolves only had 97 yards rushing in the game, not counting the 40 or so that Flemons ran after the interception. Prescott finished the game with 211 yards total yardage on offense.

Johnston attempted 15 passes, completing seven for 114 yards. Eight passes were attempted the third period. He was sacked twice in the third with losses of eight each time. However, he completed two passes in that quarter bor 40 yards, plus one for a two-point conversion. His best quarter was the second, when he was three out of three for 65 yards.

Fountain Lake netted an even 100 yards rushing. Clint Bryant, quarterback for the Cobras, attempted 16 passes, completing seven for 58 yards.

Once more Prescott was hit with a lot of panalties. The Wolves were penalized eight times for 80 yards. Six of those penalties came in the fourth period. Fountain Lake was not penalized until the fourth quarter, and then for only five yards.

Prescott finished the game with 15 first downs, 11 of them in the first half. They added four more in the third period. Fountain lake finished with a total of 11, five of them in the fourth.

This week the Curley Wolves will travel to Junction City.

The Dragons, former members of the 7AA Conference, now play in the 7A East Conference. They have a 2-4 conference record and post a 2-5 overall record.

Prescott doesn't need to be fooled by that record. The Wolves just need to remember: the game is in Junction City.

For Prescott fans who haven't caught the band, the group has a very good program each week at halftime.

You can support the Curley Wolves and the band by attending Friday night's game at Junction City.
