Emmet Area Residents Raise $2,100 St. Jude'sPublished Wednesday, October 23, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayunePeople in Emmet put aside a very special day October 12 for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. The hospital was founded by actor Danny Thomas. Over $2,000 was raised this year. Anita Allen, coordinator of the fundraiser, said $2,152.36 was raised. The annual event at Emmet had a different twist this year. It included the original bike-wheels for life ride, but the event at Emmet added a walk and a horse-a-thon this year. Dedicated riders knocked on doors and stopped people, friends and family for a special donation for them to enter these events. The ride took place starting at the Emmet Event Park located beside City Hall and across from the schools. While being escorted with a loud siren, the bike riders took off first at 9 a.m., walkers following, while going two miles through the city of Emmet. Many residents waved in appreciation to those who took their time to show what St. Jude meant to them. At 12:00 noon, the horses were off with 16 horses, and two mule wagons pulled by Eugene Collums and Marshall McCorkle. Bike riders and walkers were able to enjoy this ride also. The highest donation was given by Epsilon Omicron Chapter Beta Sigma Phi of Hope which donated $300. Kathy Schooley, the special walker of the day, was sponsored by First National Bank of Hope. With 10 to walk, 17 to ride bikes and 16 to ride horses, this sure worked up an appetite, according to Allen. The Emmet Vision Association with Jewel Allen as food coordinator did a great job feeding all the hungry particpants as well as the mothers and dads who looked on or rode in the mule wagon, according to Anita Allen. There were three entries going into the drawing and Allison Ball of Hope took the jam box home. Other particpants according to their donations will either receive a t-shirt, or t-shirt and sports bag or sweat shirt. All who turned in money will receive a certificate. Jimmy and Margie Wicker of Prescott, with balloons and a special craft booth, donated all to St. Jude. Getting the participants could not have run so smoothly without the ladies checking them in, according to Allen. These were Michelle DeHann of Emmet, Colleen Lumpkins of Texarkana and Pat Loe of Prescott. Face painters were Belinda White and Misty and Holly McKinnon of Emmet. The "Jesus Loves The Little Children" gospel jamboree took place at 2:00 p.m. with singers such as The Good Life Singers, New Creations, Greater Destiny, Rusty Carlton, Becky McKamie, Bobby Loe, Colleen Lumpkins, Nancy Lovette, Kayla Johnson, Robert Missey, Steve Otwell, Holly Otwell, Anita Allen, Rick Graves and Jennifer McKamie. All donations, time and effort were appreciated, Allen concluded. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
