PHS Faces Fouke Next; Panthers Mauled By NHS

Published Wednesday, October 30, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Prescott's 35-0 victory Friday night at Junction City moved the Curley Wolves to second place in Class AA, in spite of them having to forfeit the Ashdown game.

Because of an ineligible player who participated in that game, the Arkansas Activities Association ruled the game must be forfeited. Bret Wicker was turned down by the Nevada School District to transfer to Prescott High School. To have been eligible his parents would have had to moved inside the Prescott School District. In a board meeting this month the Nevada School District will allow a legal transfer for next year, making him eligible then.

Coach Eddie Jackson said if his parents moved now it would make him eligible now.

With the loss to Nashville and now the forfeit, Prescott is 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the 7AA Conference.

The Curley Wolves took Osceola's spot behind Nashville. Osceola lost to Marianna last week, their second for the season. Dollarway, which had been third all year, dropped out of the top 10 last week with a third loss.

In third place now is Osceola with a 5-2 record, fourth is Mena (8-

0), Huntsville (8-0) is fifth, Beebe (7-1) is sixth, Dover (8-0) is seventh, Highland (8-0) is eighth, McGehee (7-1) is ninth, and Lonoke (6-2) is tenth in Class AA.

The Curley Wolves did not have a lot of trouble against the Junction City Dragons, even though looking at the statistics quarter by quarter would indicate they did. It's just that coach Eddie Jackson was working with his passing game.

For the most part quarterback Al Johnston did all right, completing eight of 16 passes, including one touchdown and one two-point conversion. Passing yardage added up to 169 yards. He had one interception.

The Dragons did not score on the junior varsity group when they were in the game, either. They were out-classed by the superior Class AA Wolves.

The regular season is close to ending, and now the Wolves must really concentrate on finishing with no more losses.

Only two games remain for the Curley Wovles, and both of them are in Prescott.

This week is homecoming. Festivities will take place before gametime.

Fouke will be the homecoming opponent for the Wolves.

The Fouke Panthers are now in the cellar (0-4) in the 7AA Conference. They are 4-4 overall, which would indicate that they have been capable of playing some very good ball along the way. Let's hope the Curley Wolves are prepared for them.

Last week the Panthers were de-clawed by the Scrappers, 55-16.

This is the first year for the Panthers to be in Class AA. They joined Bismarck in the move from Class A. Also added to the 7AA Conference this year was Fountain Lake, which was already a Class AA school.

It appears that Prescott has made it to the state play-offs. However, the next two games must be wins to get the home field advantage in the first game. All other games will be away.

Next week on Thursday the Curley Wolves will host Fordyce. The Thursday night game is planned so the players (and the coaches, of course) can deer hunt two days later when gun season opens for deer.

Fordyce defeated Fountain Lake Friday, 31-13. De Queen beat Bismarck, 12-10. Prescott has already defeated De Queen and Bismarck.

In other games last week of interest to Prescott fans:

  • Hope shut out Ashdown, 34-0;

  • Gurdon shut out Foreman, 41-0;

  • Hot Springs beat Lakeside, 40-21; and

  • Camden Harmony Grove skunked Hermitage, 54-0.

Harmony Grove, a Prescott opponent until this year, is now ranked ninth in Class A, ahead of Rison, which lost another game last week. Stamps, another former foe of Prescott, defeated Lewisville, 33-2.

The Prescott marching band puts on a spectacular halftime show, which is `western' styled this year. You ought to go see them.
