Transfer of Nevada High Student Too Late To Help Curley Wolves ThisPublished Wednesday, October 30, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneSeason Five touchdowns were scored by the Curley Wolves Friday night as Prescott blanked the Junction City Dragons, 35-0, in a non-conference game. The win moved the Wolves' record to 6-2 after Prescott had to forfeit its first victory. In their first game this season, the Curley Wolves defeated Ashdown, 27-12. Arkansas Activities Association ruled last week that Bret Wicker was ineligible to play in that game, and the Wolves had to forfeit it. The mix-up came after Wicker and his parents had asked for and was denied a legal transfer from the Nevada School District. However, officials in Prescott were told that the Wickers had moved or were moving into the Prescott School District. "He was enrolled in school and listed eligible on our eligibility sheet," Jackson said Monday. "It was an administrative technicality. He was sent to us and we coached him." He only played the one game before the Prescott adminstrative staff found out he had not moved. After he was notified of his ineligibility, Jackson would not let Wicker participate in the following games. October 17 the Wickers asked the Nevada board for a legal transfer for next year and it was granted. He will be a senior next year. Coach Jackson's Curley Wolves scored on their first possession with the touchdown coming 11 plays after beginning on their 10-yard line. For the umpteenth time the Wolves won the coin toss and deferred until halftime, kicking off to Junction City to begin the game, and that was scary. From their 35, Jewel Easter broke loose and scampered 56 yards down the sideline before he was stopped. On fourth and 14 the Dragons tried a field goal that was off its mark by 30 or 40 yards, short and off to the side. It was recovered at the 10. Sam Marlow was the first Wolf to carry the ball and got the first down at the 21. Mike Fountain picked up two, Rashad Johnson gained five, and then Marlow picked up the first down at the Prescott 35. Marlow got the call the next two times and gained two yards on each carry before quarterback Al Johnston connected with C.D. Flemons with a pass that moved the Wolves to the Dragons 43. Johnston then hit Rashad Johnson with a pass at the 35. Johnson managed to get to the four before he was pulled down. Carlos Vanhook managed one yard, Marlow got two more, then Vanhook went in from the one for the TD. Fountain's point after try was good and Prescott led 7-0 with 5:22 left in the quarter. The Wolves on their next possession moved the ball into Dragon territory again, but a fumble by Marlow turned it back to Junction City. In the second quarter the Wolves turned it over on downs, lost a fumble and Johnston had a pass intercepted to stop all drives. In the first quarter Johnston attempted five passes, completing four for 97 yards. In addition, the Wolves rushed for 47 yards. In the second period, Johnston was one out of four for six yards, and the the Wolves only rushed for 17 yards. The Wolves made seven first downs in the first quarter, but none in the second. Junction City was only allowed one the first period, but the Dragons made four in the second. It wasn't because the Wolves couldn't do any better, because they stopped the Dragon on every threat during the game. Coach Jackson was warming up for the play-offs, trying the passing game as he did last week at Fountain Lake. In the last half, the Wolves got down to playing ball, scoring two TD's in the third period and two in the last. The kick-off to start the half by Junction City was short with Ross Cowling taking it on the 35-yard line, and he got to the 45. However, the Wolves came up one inch short of a first down on fourth and one and the ball was turned over on downs. On fourth and eight the Dragons punted with Prescott starting its scoring drive on their own 40. Vanhook got the first call and broke loose with a 28-yard run for the first down. Marlow got seven on the next play and Vanhook got the first down at the JC 16. Tracy Stafford rushed for six yards and Vanhook was stopped for no gain, then the Wolves were penalized five yards for illegal procedure. Johnston, however, passed over the middle to Flemons, who managed to get to the two before he was stopped. Vanhook then went in for the touchdown. Jackson attempted a two-point conversion, but a pass from Johnston to Marlow fell incomplete. The score remained 13-0 with 4:47 left in the quarter. Two minutes later the Wolves would get another TD. Beginning at their 18, Sam Grayson of JC was stripped of the ball by Flemons with Tobias Tidwell getting the fumble recovery. A pass intended for Rashad Johnson fell incomplete, but Johnson gained six yards on a rush play, then Heath Duke gained three more before Johnston got the first down at the JC 7. A pass from Johnston to Johnson in the end zone was good for the touchdown. Fountain found the mark and Prescott was leading 19-0 with 2:37 left in the quarter. Junction City started on their 22 next, but they went the wrong direction. Mario Moore was stopped for a one yard gain, quarterback Nick Fisher lost five on an option, then he was sacked on the next play by Jamie Williams, Jared Yates and Tidwell. On fourth and 22 the Dragons were punting from the end zone. The snap to Moore went over his head and out of the end zone for a touchback and two points for Prescott, ending the quarter. The `free' kick to Prescott from the Junction City 20 only netted 10 yards. Johnston's first play was a pass for Johnson in the end zone, but it fell incomplete. Marlow gained two yards on the next try, then Johnston handed off to Flemons on a reverse. There was no catching him as he ran the 28 yards for the TD. The kick by Fountain was good and Prescott led 28-0 with 10:06 left in the game. The Dragons were forced to punt on their next possession, as were the Wolves, who only punted twice the entire game. On JC's next possession, Duke recovered a fumble at the Junction City nine-yard line. Duke gained three yards on the first play and Gary Stovall picked up two more before Duke went in for the TD from the four. Rashad Johnson kicked the extra point to make it 35-0. Junction City fumbled three times in the fourth period, getting two of them back. In all they fumbled three times to Prescott (including the bad snap for the touchback). Prescott turned the ball over three times to the Dragons, all in the first half. The Wolves were only penalized five yards during the game, but that was not all the penalties. Two different occasions both teams had offsetting major (personal fouls) penalties. In all, JC was penalized twice for 10 yards.
