ASMS Seeks ApplicationsPublished Wednesday, October 30, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe Arkansas School for Mathematics and Sciences (ASMS) announces that student applications are now being accepted for the 1997-98 school year, according to Dr. Robert Peters, director of ASMS. The deadline to submit an application is February 15. Students from the entire state are encouraged to apply to ASMS as soon as possible. Applications may be obtained from the high school counselor or from ASMS. Admission criteria include: resident of Arkansas; currently a tenth- grade student who has a minimum of 10 Carnegie units upon completion of the tenth grade; a formal application; indication of high motivation and academic achievement that warrants more challenging and diversified curriculum in the junior and senior year; clear evidence of strong aptitude and interest in mathematics and science; three standardized achievement/assessment test scores (must have been taken within two years of the application date -- one of the test scores must be either the ACT SAT, PSAT or PLAN); a written essay; and three letters of recommendation from a high school counselor, mathematics and science teacher. A residential high school first opening in 1993, ASMS' purpose is educate Arkansas' gifted and talented mathematics and sciences students, and to develop curricula and materials to improve instruction in mathematics and sciences for all students in Arkansas.
