Go-Devils Enjoy Homecoming Feast of Gators (cont)BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 30, 1996 in the Gurdon Times its one, two, three, kick routine, giving the Devils the ball at their 46 with 2:09 left. Gurdon was flagged immediately for motion and set up shop at its 41. On the final drive of the night, Coach John Pace got nasty with Foreman. He took the "normal" sized backs out of the backfield, with the exception of quarterback. The fullback was replaced with Derick Gulley, a 295-pounder. Thomas was the tailback at 242. These two behemoths punished the Gator defensive front as they moved to the Foreman 13 on six carries. Pace eased off by letting K. Hughes take it in from the six with 3 ticks left on the clock. However, he was nasty again as Thomas plowed up the middle for the two-point conversion for the final 41-0 talley. Gurdon dominated Foreman statistically as well as every other way during the game. The Devil passing attack saw two of seven attempts completed for 57 yards. Foreman was one of six for 11 yards and one interception. Gurdon punted once for 21 yards and a seven-yard return. Foreman booted the ball four times for 116 yards, allowing 15 yards in returns. The Devils ran a total of 44 plays to Foreman's 40 and had 20 first downs while only giving up seven. The only area Foreman outshined Gurdon in was penalties as the Gators were flagged only four times for 19 yards, while the Devils saw 14 hankies fall for 140 yards. Gurdon put the ball on the ground three times, losing it once. Foreman fumbled twice, losing both. The Devil ground attack amassed 293 yards on 37 rushes for a 7.9 yard per carry average. The Gators gained 76 yards on the ground on 34 attempts for a 2.2 yard per carry average. Gurdon netted 350 total offensive yards, while allowing only 87. M. Charles was the leading ground gainer for Gurdon with 131 yards on 14 carries for a 9.4 average. Thomas was next carrying the ball 12 times for 57 yards and an average of 4.75 per carry. N. Hughes had four carries for 15 yards, with brother K. Hughes carrying twice for six yards. C. Charles had five rushed for 54 yards in the contest. The win moves Gurdon to 3-4 on the season and 3-2 in 7A-West play. It also keeps the Devil's playoff hopes alive as Gurdon is tied for third in the conference with Horatio and Stamps. At this time, Murfreesboro leads the league with an unblemished 8-0 and 5-0 record. Mineral Springs is second at 7-1 and 5-1. This week, the Devils have their work cut out for them as they make the journey to Rattler territory in their last road game of the season. Following the Murfreesboro trip, the Devils will wrap up their season Nov. 8 at home against Horatio. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
