There will be no annexation in Gurdon.

Tuesday night's General Election results showed 413 opposed the measure, while 382 voted for the annexation.

Amazingly, there were no representatives from either side of the issue on hand at the Clark County courthouse as the votes were counted.

In the other Gurdon race, Glen Hughes defeated Tammi Pledger 63-36 to capture the city council seat in Ward 6.

Looking at the totals, the Clinton-Dole ticket carried the county in a big way with 5,281 votes. The Dole-Kemp duo followed with 2,112, while Perot-Choate finished with 567 votes.

All other presidential candidates received votes in the election as well.

In the U.S. Senate race, Winston Bryant carried the county with 4,896 votes to Tim Hutchinson's 3,254.

Vincent Tolliver, the dark horse and unknown Democratic candidate for 4th Congressional District 4, wound up doing better than expected with 3,447 votes. Incumbent Jay Dickey garnered 4,549.

Charlie Cole Chaffing also carried Clark County in the Lt. Governor's race with 5,033 votes, while Win Rockefeller managed 3,120.

In other county races, Billy C. Williams, who was unopposed, remains circuit clerk with 7,342 votes.

Bill Conine retained his seat, defeating his Republican challenger 768-261.

For the Arkadelphia Board of Directors Position 1, Larry Cain took the post with 1,799 votes, while Llewellyn Terry, Sr. managed 1,305.

The race for city board post 2 had Richard "Dick" Rudolph winning 2,019-1069 over Charles Blevens.

Position 3 was won by Austin Wingfield, who beat Kenny Barnes 2,166-1,010.

The slot for position 5 was captured by Patsy Hill Harris with 1,573 votes. Her nearest competitor in the three candidate race was Eddie Colclasure with 953, followed by I.V. Chapman with 583.

The unopposed candidates did quite well as well. Some 4,987 voters cast their ballots in favor of those facing no foes.

Proposed constitutional amendment 1, for a base school millage, passed 4,309-3,345.

Amendment 2 also survived in the county with a 4,047-3,739 margin of victory.

Amendment three failed in Clark County as 3,680 voted against it, while 3,667 favored it.

The lone gambling measure, Amendment 4, on the ballot was soundly defeated. There were 5,065 votes in opposition to 3,019 in favor.

With amendment 5-8 stricken from the ballot by the courts, the next issue was Amendment 9, which passed 4,535-2,871.

Proposed initiated act 1 passed 4,926 to 2,871.

The soil and water general obligation bonds had a tough battle, barely winning the county at 3,634-3,542.
