Basketball season opened a few days early for the Nevada Bluejays as they hosted Benton-Harmony Grove Oct. 21.

The Cardinals may well have regretted making the trip to Rosston as the senior boys fell 58-52 to the Jays.

It was a close game throughout as both teams were tied at 14-14 after one and at 24-all when the buzzer sounded ending the first half

The Jays took control of the game in the third period as they pulled to a 39-30 lead and held on against the 5A-West squad determined to put an early season blemish on the home team.

The Jays were paced by hot-shooting Joseph Young who canned 19 on the night to lead his team.

This effort was followed by Ricardo Young, who netted 12 and was a perfect 4-4 at the charity stripe. Eric Murphy and Casey Curtis contributed six each in the win.

Bo Robertson single-handedly kept the Cards in the game with his 26 points, including an astounding six three-pointers.

However, his teammates were unable to provide the support necessary and the Jays were victorious.

The Harmony-Grove team was also four of five at the line.

The Jays shot well from the gimme line, connecting on 20 of 33 attempts as they went 1-0 on the season.

SENIOR GIRLS

Cold shooting late doomed Nevada's girls in their first game of the season as the Lady Cards posted a 43-28 win.

The Lady Jays opened with a 15-10 lead, but began cooling off in the second period as the Harmony Grove five came alive and took the lead at 24-20.

While the Lady Jays would only score eight points in the rest of the game, the Benton crew continued shooting better, leading 33-24 after three and the final margin of 43-28.

Ramona Evans was the Lady Jay's offense as she poured in 14 points for NHS. Unfortunately, Evans scored 12 in the opening period and only two in the second half.

Fourteen was the magic number for Benton Harmony Grove as S. Burke netted a like number for her team.

Neither team went to the charity stripe much, but the Lady Jays were two of three in free throw attempts, while the Lady Cards were two of seven.
