Nevada's senior boys seem to like playing close games as they edged Emerson 66-62 Oct. 29 at Nevada High.

This gave the Bluejays a 2-1 record on the year.

The Jays took an early lead, 21-12, after the first period, only to find themselves on the short end of a 34-30 halftime score.

This meant the NHS crew had to hustle in the third quarter to tie the game at 47-47 before pulling away in the final stanza for the win.

Ricardo Young stepped up his game by ripping the cords for 34 points to lead the Jays, and was a perfect 8-8 at the free throw line. Young scored 11 points in the final period, including three from the charity stripe.

Joseph Young and Casey Curtis contributed 11 points each in the victory.

The Pirates had a more balanced scoring attack as four members of the squad posted double figure scores.

Cory Carter led the 'Bucs with 19, while Loyd had 16, Scotty Pennington added 17 and Eric Shaw netted 10.

In addition, the Pirates were 12 of 18 from the line. Nevada, on the other hand, was 15 of 22 from the stripe.

SENIOR GIRLS

The Lady Jays needed all the help they could get in posting a 41-40 win over the Lady 'Bucs for their first win of the season.

The Lady Jays, 1-2, took a 16-8 lead at the end of one and led 19-15 at the half.

Emerson came back in the third quarter to take a 39-37 advantage, before the Nevada five rallied for the win.

Shonda Young paved the way for the victory with 18 points in the contest. Ramona Evans followed with 10.

Kendral Atkinson paced Emerson with 13 points.

The Lady 'Bucs were four of seven from the stripe, while the Lady Jays went five of 10 at the line.

JUNIOR GIRLS

Nevada's junior girls whipped Emerson's bunch 27-19.

The Lady Jays took the lead in the inaugural quarter, 9-6, but wound up on the wrong end of a 12-11 halftime score. At the end of three, the Lady Jays had responded with a 17-16 lead and won the final period 10-3.

Shireta Henry paved the way for the win with 15 points in the game for the Lady Jays, with teammate Pam Young netting 10.

Emerson was led by Tiffany Robinson's 12 points.

The Lady 'Bucs were three of six from the free throw line, with the Lady Jays a scant five of 21 at the stripe.
