Russell K. Shope of Prescott was a recent inductee of the Gamma Lambda chapter of Phi Sigma Pi fraternity at Louisian Tech University at Ruston, La.

Phi Sigma Pi is a national honor fraternity for students with high academic achievement. The fraternity recognizes outstanding scholarship, leadersthip qualities and community envolvement and promotes fellowship among its members.

Shope is a sophomore computer science-engineering major at Louisiana Tech. He was a 1995 honor graduate at Prescott High School. He is the son of Sandra Anderson Shope of Prescott.


On Monday, October 7, Amanda Salb was inducted into the Mount Hollyoke College Student Government Association as a senator.

Salb, a graduate of Nevada High School, is a resident of Buckner and the daughter of Karl and Jessie Salb. She is a sophomore at Mount Hollyoke College in South Hadley, Mass.

The induction featured Mount Holyoke president Joanne V. Creigton and was held at the campus banquet center. During the ceremony, each senator took an oath of office. The event also included a senatorial procession, singing by campus a cappela groups and a reception for the campus community.

Each senator represents the concerns of a student organization or committee at biweekly student government senate meetings. This forum provides student senators with the opportunity to make suggestions, express concerns and maintain a voice within the larger student government. Mount Holyoke's student government entered its 99th year this fall.

Mount Holyoke College is the oldest continuing institution of higher education for women in the United States. Founded in 1837 by Mary Lyon, Mount Holyoke is a preminent liberal arts college.
