SWADC Is Awarded Grant; Donation Made

Published Wednesday, November 6, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Southwest Arkansas Development Council (SWADC) Literacy Program in Nevada County has announced the program received a grant from the Arkansas Learning Resources and Technology Center.

"The grant has provided a designated phone line used to connect to the Internet, E-Mail and fax line," outreach worker Teri Hughes said.

Hughes said the phone line has been funded for approximately four months as the literacy program evaluates the need and usefulness of it. When funding is used up, the local program will determine how to continue to fund the phone line.

A generous donation from Prescott Video has also been given the program, Hughes said. "Cable will be installed to the tutoring room to allow volunteer tutors and adult students to search the weekly guide and watch educational programs from several sources on cable."

The SWADC Literacy Program is looking for a volunteer media coordinator to assist with the expanding program resources, according to Hughes.

Continued community support has made it posssible to purchase multi- level tutoring software for use in teaching, reading, spelling and math.

Volunteers are offered a free two-hour computer training inservice. The inservice has been set for November 22 at 1:30 p.m. in the Prescott tutoring room.

Guest instructor will be Billy Upson of the Miller County Literacy Council. He will provide training in simple computer operation and use of the tutoring software.

Anyone interested in tutoring an adult on the computer may register to attend. All active tutors are encouraged to attend. Space is limited, therefore, you must pre-register by calling 887-5536.

Future computer training may be offered if there is an overflow of interest.

Volunteers are still needed for tutors using the regular one-on-one Laubach method to tutor.

Call today to register for the next tutor training workshop.

The Literacy office has holiday seasonal lesson plans to help you explain the reason behind the season like Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Pick up a copy at your convenience.
