Otwell Wins Sheriff's Position

Steve Otwell, a Democrat, has been elected Sheriff of Nevada County. He defeated Independent candidate Johnny Campbell, 2,450 to 1,418, according to complete but unofficial totals from the County Clerk's office.

Otwell defeated incumbant Harold Vines in the Primary Run-off Election in June.

Sandra Rodgers defeated Republican Tim Cornelius for State Representative District 28. The total in Nevada County was 1309 to 500. In Hempstead County the margin was greater.

Both candidates are residents of Hope, but have Nevada County connections.

The county also went with the national trend in re-electing President Bill Clinton to four more years. In the county Clinton-Gore received 2,279 votes, Dole-Kemp 976, and Perot-Choate 345.

In the U.S. Senate race, Democrat Winston Bryant beat Republican Tim Hutchinson, 2,299-1,503. However, Hutchinson was leading across the state late Tuesday night.

Jay Dickey was an easy winner in the Fourth Congressional District for re-election. He carried Nevada County, 2,137-1,611.

Charlie Cole Chaffin defeated Win Rockefeller in the county, 2,260- 1,541. However, late Tuesday it was too close to call across the state.

This is how the other races went in the county -- Amendment 1: for 1,819, against 1,480; Amendment 2: for 1,602, against 1,826; Amendment 3: for 1,411, against 1,812; Amendment 4: for 1,620, against 2,097; Amendment 9: for 1,591, against 1,272; Initiated Act 1: for 1,638, against 1,272; and Arkansas Soil and Water Bond Issue: for 1,225, against 1,697.
