NHS Starts ProgramPublished Wednesday, November 13, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneNevada High School has joined the Southern Regional Education Board's High Schools That work program which is a large-scale effort to combine challenging academic courses and modern vocational studies to raise the achievements of career-bound high shcool students. As part of this effort, the faculty has begun training in the Reading To Learn (RTL) program which teaches reading comprehension and study skills. Developed by Ray Morgan of Old Dominion University in Georgia, RTL can be applied to all disciplines and can provide students with a model for life-long learning. During the pre-school inservice, the NHS faculty was introduced to five of the more than 100 strategies: two-column note taking, anticipation guides, cubing, possible sentences, and insert. The teachers are currently practicing these techniques with their students. Further training will continue throughout the 1996 and 1997 school years.
