Turnout Of Voters Is HighBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, November 13, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune By JOHN MILLER Nevada County had a surprisingly large voter turnout for last Tuesday's General Election. According to Davis Benton, Nevada County Election Commission Chairman, more than 3,800 voters cast their ballots. This, he said, is about 70 percent of those eligible to vote. Because of the turnout, he said, two precincts, Bluff City and Falcon, ran out of ballots before the polls closed. However, legal ballots were taken to these locations so all voters could make their choices on the same ballots. Benton said fewer people voted on the amendment issues than for the candidates on the four-page ballot. "This tells us the people either weren't interested (in these issues) or didn't know about them. "The pollworkers did a good job," Benton continued, "they kept things under control. There were no complaints about the procedures." The general election was the sixth election to be held in Nevada County in the past 12 months, he added. The next election scheduled is not until Sept. 1997, when voters will cast their ballots for school elections. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
