Lady Go-Devils Spoil Blevins HomecomingBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, November 20, 1996 in the Gurdon Times By JOHN MILLER Gurdon's Lady Devils spoiled Blevins' homecoming Friday night, Nov. 8 with a 63-57 win. The Lady Devils got off to a slow start in the opening period, but rallied late to take a 12-9 lead at the conclusion of the game's inaugural eight minutes. Blevins' Lady Hornets showed their propensity to foul early on and, in fact, were in the two shot bonus after committing 10 fouls in the first quarter. The Lady Devils only scored five points from the field in the period, as Wanda Cornish canned a deuce and trey. The rest of the points came from the charity stripe, with Gurdon connecting on seven of 14. All nine points for the Lady Hornets came from the field with Sweat leading the way with five. While there were fewer fouls in the second stanza, the Lady Hornets were able to rally and tie the game at 27-27 at the half. Gurdon utilized a balanced scoring attack during the period, while Jordan dominated scoring for Blevins. The third quarter picked up where the first period ended as fouls piled up in a hurry against Blevins. Gurdon went to the line 14 times in the period, converting five. The home team, on the other hand, had its problems scoring as the Gurdon man-to-man defense tightened the screws down. For a while in the final eight minutes, it appeared as though the Lady Devils were going to blow the game apart. With three minutes left they enjoyed a double-digit lead. However, the Lady Hornets responded, fighting back and cutting the lead to three at one time before Gurdon's offense woke up again and put the game away. Fouls again played a big part of the period as Gurdon went to the charity stripe 18 times, sending nine through the nylon. Sweat led the Blevins attack in the period with 11 points, as several members of the team found themselves watching the game from the bench after fouling out. Overall, Gurdon converted 28 of 54 free throw attempts, while Blevins was six of 14. Alicia Clayborn led the Lady Devils win with 23 points and was 13 of 20 at the line. Cornish finished the game with 11 points. Sweat and Jordan were the leading scorers for the Lady Hornets with 18 each. White finished the game with 10. In a game played Monday, Nov. 11, the Lady Devils posted a 63-53 win over Dierks' Lady Outlaws. Once again, the Lady Devils didn't trail at the end of any period as they opened with a 14-12 advantage in the first, led 31-23 at the half and were up 43-41 at the end of three. Clayborn was again the team's leading scorer with 19 points, while Cornish contributed 17 in the win. Dierks was paced by Alexander with 15 points, with Story netting 12 and Kesterson sending 10 through the nets. The Lady Devils converted 10 of 21 free throws, while Dierks was seven of 17 at the line. Gurdon made it two in a row over Dierks with a 38-24 win in a junior varsity girls contest. The Lady Devils found themselves on the short end of a 9-5 first quarter score, but rallied to go ahead 20-13 at the half and led 29-16 after three fourths of the game had been completed. Yvonne Penny paced Gurdon with nine points. Teammate Lori Kelley contributed eight. Markham had eight to lead Dierks. The Lady Devils were eight of 12 in free throws, while Dierks was four of nine. Gurdon's junior teams are slated to tangle with Arkadelphia Thursday night in Gurdon starting at 5:30, while the senior squads will host Lewisville Friday night. Tipoff for these games is 6 p.m. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
