Model Trains To Be Part Of Holiday Exhibit At State Capitol

Published Wednesday, November 20, 1996 in the Gurdon Times

Model trains will be added to the Christmas decorations at the state Capitol this year, beginning December 7, the day of the Capitol Lighting Ceremony.

The display will consist of three sets on a three level structure on the first floor of the Capitol. It will be constructed by the Central Arkansas Garden Railway Society. The firt level of the structure will be 21 feet in diameter. The second level will be 13 feet across while the top level, where the North Pole will be located, is nine feet in diameter.

The Central Arkansas Garden Railway Society is a group of dedicated model railroad enthusiasts who have turned their attentions to not only the hobby of model railroading, but the art of gardening. Usually their Garden Railways are built outside in gardens where they stay 365 days a year. The Capitol display will be indoors.

Most model railroads are on a scale of 1/8 inch to one foot. The Garden Railways scale 1/2 inch to the foot.

Other contributors to the project are Union Pacific Railroad, Phoenix Sound Systems and the Arkansas Valley Model Railroad Club.

Anyone wanting information on the Garden Railway Christmas display may call Bruce Stockbridge at 501-227-8643 or Norm Anderson at 501-851- 8953.
