Prescott Squads Sweep GurdonBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, November 20, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune By JOHN MILLER Prescott's senior girls have yet to play a legitimate basketball game, but don't tell those who have played against them so far. The Wolverettes hammered Gurdon's Lady Devils 59-64 in what was called a junior varsity game recently, as Coach Cecily Butler pretty much cleared her bench. The Wolverettes took control 12-6 at the end of one and were up 23-19 at the break. Gurdon heated up in the third quarter to take a 36- 34 lead before the Prescott quintet decided to play ball in the final eight minutes. Stacy Stockton was the game's leading scorer with 25 points, including nine for 11 at the free throw line, three assists, nine rebounds and four steals. Jessica Hildebrand added 13 points, netted three of four from the charity stripe added three steals and a trio of assists to her stats as well. Leslie Hines canned one from long range. Alicia Clayborn led Gurdon with 15 points. Prescott's Laura Culpepper pulled down 10 boards, while Gladies Gulley added seven. The Wolverettes were 16 of 24 from the line, while the Lady Devils connected on 14 of 35 free throw attempts. The Wolverettes also outrebounded Gurdon 43-24. Otherwise, Prescott's junior girls have been dominant on the hardwood. The Lady Cubs drilled Gurdon 36-24 in their game, which counted. Gurdon took an 11-6 lead after one, but found the Prescott crew fired up in the second period. The Lady Cubs led 18-13 at the break and controlled the third period 7-2 to go into the final six minutes leading 25-20. Traci Graham drilled the nets for 16 points, including four rebounds, four assists and going five of seven from the line. Sunshine Kelley added 13, with five of six at the stripe. Jeania Haynie pulled down nine boards and had four steals to go with her two points. Lekeshia Martin and Kaylor Sorrells each scored two. Laura Beth Williams scored a point, but pulled down four rebounds. Donisha Williamson had four steals in the game as well. Gurdon was led by Vanesha Young with 10 points and Tiffany Ware's six. Prescott was 12 of 21 at the line, while Gurdon hit nine of 22. The Lady Cubs made it 2-0 on the season as they pelted Nashville 34-22. The two squads were knotted at 6-6 after one, with the Lady Scrappers taking a short-lived 13-12 lead to the lockers at the half. Prescott got fired up during intermission and pounded Nashville 16-5 in the third period to go up 28-18. Graham was again the leading scorer for the Lady Cubs with 12, including eight rebounds and three steals. Haynie netted eight points, with three boards and two steals. Kelley added six points, while Williamson and Williams both scored four. Madison and Stanley led Nashville with seven each. The Lady Cubs were 0-4 at the line, while Nashville was four of eight. In the eighth grade game, the Lady Scrappers won 13-12. A cold second quarter doomed Prescott as the Lady Scrappers were able to break a 4-4 tie after one and go ahead 7-4. Prescott outscored Nashville 8-6 in the second half. Katrena Sorrells led the Lady Cubs with four points, while Fallon Adams, Tramellia Franklin and Tiffany Smith all had two. LaShondria Sorrells and Tremace Hardamon scored one each. The Lady Cubs had a tough night at the line converting two of 18, while Nashville shot three of 12. SENIOR BOYS The Curley Wolves did something in their first game they didn't do at all last season -- win. The Wolves posted a 74-64 victory over Gurdon in a Nov. 12 contest in Prescott. Prescott took control of the contest in the opening period, 16-13, and never looked back. The Wolves led 32-28 at the half and 55-43 at the end of three. Haynie led the Wolves with 15 points in the game, while Matthews contributed 14. Jason Webb added 12 and Jason Morrow caned 10. Terry Cornish paced Gurdon with 21 points, while Corey Marsh added 17. Prescott was 28 of 41 in free throw attempts, while Gurdon connected on 12 of 24 at the line. JUNIOR BOYS The Cubs, on the other hand, fought hard, but fell victim to the Scrappers on Nov. 14, 39-31. The Scrappers led 8-6 after one, 16-13 at the half and 24-21 at the end of three. Brian Woodley led Prescott with 10 points in the game. Nashville was led by Scott Willis' 21.
