Curley Wolves Pluck Owls In Second Round Of Play-Offs (cont)Published Wednesday, November 27, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayunehigh, and before John Lally could get the kick away, Ben Jones and Justin Jernigan tackled him for the second safety. The score was 27-0. At this point, the Owls didn't know they were being Wolverized. The `free' kick from the 20 by McGehee went out of bounds, bringing another penalty against them. Ross Cowling took the next kick at the McGehee 45. He was finally stopped at the 29. Vanhook gained one on the first down, then Shane Pipkin got another one. Stafford got the next call with no one stopping him as he raced for the end zone with 49 seconds left in the third period. Jackson sent a freshman in to kick the extra point. Ottis Harris' PAT went through the uprights to make the score 34-0. McGehee's game was in the final period with Prescott's reserves in most of the time. The Owls gained 188 yards on the ground the last quarter, most of them coming on two drives. Beginning at their 19-yard line the Owls took 10 plays to score with Spratt going over from the three. The kick by Toni Mirabete was blocked by Scott Graham, Adam Burke and Doug Flenory to keep the score at 34-6. Stafford took the McGehee kick on his 13. He was finally stopped at the McGehee 18. However, Jernigan fumbled the ball on the second play with the Owls recovering. Donnie Blackmon got the frist down 19 yards downfield, and on the next play he broke away for a 73-yard run and a TD, ending the game at 34-12. Prescott ended the game with a total of 263 offensive yards, 165 of them rushing. McGehee had a total of 340 yards, 322 of them rushing. Johnston completed five of 13 passes for 98 yards. The Owls (using two quarterbacks) passed 12 times, completing two for 18 yards. The Owls, thanks to a good fourth quarter, finsihed with 18 first downs to Prescott's 14. Prescott only had three penalties that totaled 25 yards. McGehee was penalized nine times for 70 yards. Each team had three turnovers. McGehee also gave the ball to Prescott three times on downs; Prescott did once to the Owls. Game time Friday at the PHS Stadium is 7:30.
