Study On Indians Completed By PES 3rd Graders In Mrs. Prewitt's Class

Published Wednesday, November 27, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

Mrs. Brenda Prewitt's third grade class at Prescott Elementary School has just completed a unit of study on native Americans.

The children had a tribe of their choice which they researched, gathered information and presented to the class. Several models of homes, ways of life, work of the men and women, games played by the children, natural resources, and customs were a few of the things learned.

On Monday, November 18, all third graders had a special speaker, Glenda Westmoreland. She did a superb job of explaining the 1972-75 archaeological dig that took place on her farm in the 1970s.

Westmoreland kept the children's attention with her fascinating details of the ceremonial mounds, the customs and the 500-year-old bowl, as well as the unique arrowheads that had been found on her property.

The children have used several different teaching styles that Mrs. Prewit required from her K-4 crusade class to enhance their study.

Several literature selections have been used to cover all areas of study. Circle stories, venn diagrams, art work, science projects, charts and graphs are just a few.

The children's projects are on display at the elementary school. Everyone is invited to stop by any time to view the projects.
