Bluff CityJerry McKelvyPublished Wednesday, July 28, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune We are approaching the dog days of summer. Most of the crops are either finished or burned up from the heat. The most important thing is to stay cool and think of the fall days ahead, but don't forget that next electric bill that will be coming soon. There are some good watermelons to be had in Bluff City now. It seems that hot, dry weather makes sweeter melons. Bluff City has not had a good rain in weeks. Larry and Sandra Hildebrand from Houston, Texas, were visiting in Bluff City last weekend. I had not seen Larry since we were in school together over thirty years ago. Also visiting were Larry and Sandra Beaver from Fordyce. Stacy and Jennifer Hildebrand performed at the Oaklawn Opry in Texarkana last Saturday night, July 24. Stacy and Jennifer were in Bluff City last Sunday. Stacy led the singing at church on Sunday morning. I came across an anti-smoking ad printed in the Nevada County paper in 1913 that I though was interesting. It goes like this: "A word to you, sonny, you little 12- or 13-year-old boy who is smoking cigarettes on the sly. What do you want to be when you grow up a stalwart, healthy, vigorous, broad-shouldered man or a puny, measley, no account, weak-minded dude? if you want to be a man, strong like a man, with hair on your face, brains in your head, and muscle in your limbs, you just let those cigs alone. If you want to be a thing pitied by your folks, despised by the girls and held in contempt by the fellows, keep right on smoking and end your days in an insane asylum." Our thought this week: 'Nothing in the world is friendlier than a wet dog.' Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
