Caruthers' War Service Will Be Honored

Published Wednesday, December 4, 1996 in the Gurdon Times

The Arkadelphia Chapter, and the Captian Nathaniel Mills Chapter, Hurst, Texas, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Clark County Historical Society will place a marker to commemorate the Revolutionary War Service of John Caruthers.

The ceremony will be held on December 7, 1996 at 11:00 a.m. at the Okolona Cemetery.

Children of John Caruthers: Samuel married Sarah Vaughn; William married Margaret Blair; John Jr. married Rachel Bolen; Sarah married Henry Wirt; Martha married John McDaniel/McDonald and Elizabeth married Joe Thomas.

John Caruthers was born July 12, 1746 in Baltimore County, Maryland according to his Revolutionary War Pension No. 2576-S32163. He fought as a Ranger from the 96th District, South Carolina and as a private in North Carolina. He was taken prisoner at Nobs Creek and released after the Battle of Kings Mountain. He left North Carolina for Tennessee where lived about six years. He was next in Christian County, Kentucky for about eight years. By 1812 he is in Illinois Territory where he enlisted in the War of 1812 (he was 66) as a Ranger under Captain Jacob Short. By 1820 he is in Independence County, Arkansas. He applied for a pension in 1833, and soon after moved to Clark County, where he had relatives. He died in Clark County in Aug./Sept of 1841. He was 95 years old.
