SAFETY CHECKS MADEPublished Wednesday, July 28, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe NCSO, in conjunction with the Arkansas State Police, conducted safety checks in Nevada County during the weekend. Otwell said these checks resulted in several motorists being arrested for driving while under the influence of an intoxicating liquor or other substance, along with citations being issued for those with no driver's license, no proof of insurance and driving on a suspended license. Additionally, a number of people were intercepted with alias warrants from other agencies. These checks, Otwell said, will be done every weekend somewhere in the county. The checkpoints have been set up to help keep the highways and county roads in Nevada County safe. Those who drink, he said, should be responsible and not drive. And those who plan on driving shouldn't drink. Anyone stopped at a checkpoint or by an officer on patrol will be cited for DWI. Anyone planning on taking a vacation or leaving their home for a few days should let the NCSO know of their plans. This way, Otwell said, deputies will be given the information on who's not home and will make special patrols in the area to check on these residences. Tags will be left on doors showing a deputy has been at the scene. The idea behind this, the sheriff said, is to try and prevent crimes before they occur instead of having to work at solving them afterwards. He also invited the public to call the NCSO at 887-2616 with any information they have concerning a crime, as the information could be what is required in solving a crime.
