Chamber Events Set For Holiday

Published Wednesday, December 4, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce has plenty on tap for the Christmas holidays.

The holiday fun begins Thursday, Dec. 5, with Christmas on the Square at the Nevada County Courthouse from 5-8 p.m.

This marks the 11th year for this event. The program will follow its usual format with chorals, singing groups and choirs from area daycare centers, schools and churches. The program kicks off with the Prescott High School Band holding a concert at 5 p.m.

However, before Christmas on the Square starts, Prescott merchants will hold their holiday sale from 3-8 o'clock.

The Chamber is urging all residents to visit these stores to do some early Christmas shopping and get some great deals in the process.

On Thursday, Dec. 12, the Southwest Arkansas Development Council will host a community coffee from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Prescott Senior Citizen Center.

The public is invited to attend.

This will be followed by an open house at the Prescott Rural Health Clinic from 2-5 p.m. at 1484 W. First North.

There will be free blood pressure readings, free blood sugar screenings and free cholesterol testing at the open house.

Dr. Charles Vermont is the medical director, with Penny Hill the family nurse practitioner.

A merchant window decorating contest will be judged Dec. 5 in conjunction with the Festival of Lights.

The Festival of Lights is a project inspired by the decorating of the Nevada County Courthouse designated as "Henry's Lights," in memory of the late-Nevada County Judge John Henry.

Many downtown buildings were outlined in white lights last year, with plans to complete the lighting of the remaining buildings this year.

Businesses and industry have been asked to participate in the Festival of Lights by sponsoring displays along Highway 67 between the Depot and W. Main, and along E First South between East Main and the Depot.

Winners will be announced at the Christmas on the Square program Dec. 5.
