Lady Devils Subdue FoesPublished Wednesday, December 11, 1996 in the Gurdon TimesBY JOHN MILLER Gurdon's Lady Devils have been on a tear this season on the hardcourt. On Nov. 11, they whipped the Lady Outlaws of Dierks 63-53 behind the double-barrelled attack of Alicia Clayborn, with 19 points, and Wanda Cornish, who scored 17 in the game. The Lady Devils started with a 14-12 lead after one, stretching it to a 31-23 halftime advantage. By the end of three, Gurdon was in command 43-31. Alexander netted 15 for Dierks, while Story scored 12 and Kesterson added 10. The Lady Devils were 12 of 24 in free throw shooting, while Dierks was seven of 18. GURDON 60 LEWISVILLE 43 Lewisville was the next to fall in a Nov. 15 game, as the Lady Devils scorched the Lady Red Devils 60-43. It was a hot time on the court for Gurdon as they opened with a 19-6 first quarter, and leading 33-21 at the half. By the end of three, Gurdon was in command 43-31. Lavonda Young was the leading scorer for Gurdon with 17. Cornish sent 15 through the hoops, while Clayborn added 12. Sherie Davis led Lewisville with 16. Gurdon was two of eight at the stripe, with the Lady Red Devils converting seven of 14. GURDON 40 LR HALL 45 The Lady Devils had problems with the Lady Warriors of Little Rock Hall, falling 45-40 on Nov. 30. The first period was a battle to the buzzer, with the Lady Warriors leading 15-13. However, the visitors were able to put some distance between themselves and the Lady Devils in the second period as Hall went up 25-19 and held on for the win. Clayborn had the hot hand for Gurdon during the game with 16 points. Tameka Hatley added 13. Brown led Hall with 16, while Anderson scored 12 and Reed had 11. Free throws could have made the difference in the contest, but neither team shot well from the line. Gurdon was five of 20, while Hall converted seven of 25. GURDON 49 STAMPS 34 The Lady Devils opened well against conference foe Stamps in the opening round of the Southern Arkansas University Tournament Dec. 2. Gurdon was able to stun the Lady Yellowjackets 49-34 in the contest. The Lady Devils took control early, 13-6, and continued applying the pressure. At the half Gurdon led 24-13, and was up 35-22 after three. Clayborn again bore the brunt offensively with 16 points, while Hatley added 15 and Young scored 11. Stamps was led by M. Baxter's 12. The Lady Devils nailed 13 of 30 free throw attempts, while Stamps hit 14 of 27. GURDON 52 STEPHENS 53 Gurdon's stay in the SAU tourney ended abruptly Wednesday, Dec. 4, when the Stephens Lady Roadrunners ran away with a 53-52 win. Gurdon Coach Donald Williams said his girls couldn't score when they needed to in the fourth quarter, though they had several chances to win the game. Stephens took a 12-7 lead at the end of one, and led 28-25 at the half. Gurdon rallied in the third period to take a short-lived 41-37 lead, but went cold in the final eight minutes. Cornish led the charge with 15 points for the Lady Devils, while Clayborn and Young each scored an even dozen. Stephens was paced by Porchia with 17 and Torrence's 14.
