Go-Devils Doing Well On HardwoodPublished Wednesday, December 11, 1996 in the Gurdon TimesBY JOHN MILLER With the exception of an opening season loss to Prescott, Gurdon's senior boys have been on a tear. The Devils rallied after the Prescott game to hammer Blevins 84-68 on the Hornets home court. Gurdon's offense got hot early as the Devils posted a 23-12 first quarter lead and were up 49-32 at the half. By the end of three, Gurdon led 69-44. Eric Hatley led the way with 23 points, while Marcus Wright added 18 and Mario Charles poured in 12. Taylor and Scott led Blevins with 14 each. The Devils converted half their free throws, hitting six of 12, while Blevins was four of 14 at the line. GURDON 87 LEWISVILLE 61 Lewisville was next to feel the wrath of the Devils as they were fried 84-61. Gurdon wasted no time in showing the Red Devils who was king of Hades as they took a 23-19 lead after one, stretching it to a 51-30 halftime advantage. At the end of the third, Gurdon was fully in command 73-45. Corey Marsh stepped forward to lead his Devilish brigade with 25, while Wright followed with 20. Johnson scored 15 for Lewisville, while Anderson had 14 and Foster ended with 12. Neither team could brag on their free throw shooting as Gurdon hit seven of 27 and Lewisville was a pathetic 12 of 41. GURDON 68 MONTICELLO 54 Monticello's Billiegoats weren't nearly gruff enough when they tangled with Gurdon Nov. 30, and were roasted 68-54. The 'Goats managed to stay even with the Devils in the first period at 10-10, and led 26-24 at the half. However, Gurdon's offense came alive in the third quarter as the Devils took control of the game 51-40. The Devils had a trio of players in double figures as Marsh netted 18, Wright sank 15 and Charles added 10. G. Freeman led the 'Goats with 10. Gurdon's work at the line improved as the Devils netted 11 of 19. The 'Goats were 13 of 30 in free throws. GURDON 53 DERMOTT 41 Dermott's Rams wound up being goats as the Devils whipped them 53-41 in the opening round of the Fordyce tourney. The Rams were able to take a 14-12 lead in the first period, but couldn't add to it as the two teams played even in the second period. At the half, the score was 31-29 in Dermott's favor. But a different Gurdon team came out in the third, with a more tenacious defense. In fact, the Rams were broiled 11-0 in the third as the Devils took over and rolled on to the win. Marsh ripped the cords for 16, while Wright played string music for 12 and Terry Cornish netted 11. Johnson led the Rams with 11. Gurdon shot 60 percent at the line, hitting six of 10, while the Rams were nine of 13. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
