For the most part, Gurdon's junior girls' basketball team has been playing well.

The Lady Devils opened the season with a 37-22 win over the Lady Outlaws of Dierks Nov. 11 with Tiffany Ware taking the offensive lead with 12 points. Ebonee Crow added nine in the win.

The Lady Devils started strong and led throughout the contest. They were up 13-7 after one and led 15-12 at the half. In the third period, the offense again heated up as the Lady Devils pulled away to a 25-14 advantage.

The Lady Devils were two of five at the line, while Dierks shot seven of 26.

The Lady Devils ran into a group of angry Warriors on Nov. 18 when they were handled by Ouachita 54-35.

Gurdon's girls never led in the contest as they trailed 7-6 after one and were down 27-9 at the half. It got worse in the third period as Ouachita lengthened its lead to 44-17.

Ware and Angela Walker paced Gurdon with 10 each. Chancellor scored 22 to lead all scorers, while McClure netted 13 and Kiziar added another dozen.

The Lady Devils were 14 of 35 in free throws, while Ouachita was near perfect at 31 of 34.

ARKADELPHIA 34

A poor second and third period doomed Gurdon against cross county rival Arkadelphia on Nov. 21 as the Lady Devils went down 34- 21.

Gurdon opened with a 7-6 lead, but saw the Lady Beavers rally in the second to take a 13-10 advantage to the lockers at the break.

The Lady Devils could only manage a free throw in the third period, while the Lady Beavers poured in eight to go up 21-11.

Again, Ware led the Gurdon offense with nine points.

J. Dermott paced Arkadelphia with 10.

Gurdon was seven of 19 at the stripe, while the Lady Beavers converted 15 of 39.

The Lady Devils gained a measure of revenge against the Lady Beavers in the opening round of the Blevins Junior Tournament Dec. 2 with a 34-31 win.

The Lady Beavers won the first half, leading 11-10 at the end of one and 21-20 at the break. However, the second half was won by the Lady Devils. Gurdon took the lead for good at the end of the third 26-25 and held Arkadelphia at bay in the final six minutes.

Vonda Young sparked the Lady Devils with 12, while Turner led all scorers for Arkadelphia with 13.

Free throws kept the Lady Beavers in the game as they went to the line 33 times, converting 13. Gurdon connected on five of 16 shots.

PRESCOTT 41

Gurdon's exit from the Blevins tourney came at the hands of a long-time rival, and the eventual champs -- Prescott.

The Lady Devils couldn't overcome Prescott's 50 percent field goal shooting in the contest as they fell 41-26. They also went cold late in the fourth period and couldn't buy a basket.

The Cubettes opened with a 10-4 lead, but were unable to pull away from the Lady Devils in the second period. At the half, the score was 20-14.

But, the hot-shooting Cubettes managed to win the third and fourth frames, and salt away the win.

Young again led the Lady Devils with 11 points.

Traci Graham had the hot hand in the game, though, as she poured in 21 points. Sunshine Kelley added 10.

The Lady Devils converted on six of 13 free throw attempts, while Prescott hit 11 of 19.
