Nevada Teams Sweep First Rounds At GenoaBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 18, 1996 in the Nevada County Picayune Emmet felt the wrath of the Nevada BlueJays in the Genoa Central Senior Tournament Wednesday, Dec. 11. The Eagles have already had a rough year, losing their gym to arson and having nowhere to play their home games. Meeting Nevada did nothing to improve Emmet's woes, as the Jays grounded the Eagles 95-21. It was all Nevada from the opening tip as the Jays flew off to a 27-4 first quarter lead. The second period was a mirror of the first as Nevada continued adding to its lead, while Emmet floundered offensively. At the half, Nevada led 45-10. Nevada Coach Glyndon Franklin cleared his bench during the game as his squad was by far the superior team on the hardwood. By the end of three, the Jays had the mortally wounded Eagles down 70-13, and outscored Emmet 25-8 in the final stanza. Julius Gulley made the most of his minutes on the court as he ripped the cords for 20, including four three-pointers, to lead all scorers. Lamar Haynie followed suit, showing his musical talent as he played string music for 18 points. Rothenberger led Emmet with an even dozen. The tale from the charity stripe showed Nevada connecting on eight of 15, while Emmet netted six of 19. LADY JAYS 60 GENOA CENTRAL 45 Two different games were played when the Lady Jays tangled with the host girls, Genoa, in tournament action. The Lady Dragons were breathing fire in the first half, only to be extinguished in the second half, as Nevada posted a 60-45 win. The Lady Dragons beat their reptilian wings for an 18-13 lead at the end of one, and held a slender halftime lead at 29-26. Game two occurred in the second half when the Lady Jays brought in their firefighting equipment and put out the Genoa blaze. Nevada's defense kicked in, limiting Genoa to 10 points, while the Lady Jays began their quest for victory as they took the lead at 45-39. The Lady Dragon's were killed in the final frame, as the Lady Jays outscored them 15-6. Ramona Evans buried her lance in the Lady Dragons' heart with 16 points, while Dilesha Easter's 14 arrows helped in the quest. Shonda Henry added 10 more wounds to Genoa. Lynda Green was Genoa's offense as she scored 18 points. The Lady Jays were an even 50 percent from the free throw line as they connected on 14 of 28. Genoa's effort from the charity stripe was slightly better as they hit nine of 16. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
