Vehicle Recovered After Check Found To Be Bad; Suspected Forger NabbedPublished Wednesday, December 18, 1996 in the Nevada County PicayuneA Prescott man has been reunited with his 1983 Chevrolet El Camino after having sold it and being paid with a hot check. According to Jim Westmoreland, criminal investigator with the Nevada County Sheriff's Office and Prescott Police Department, John William Glass sold the vehicle to Khalin Callaway, 33, of Texas, who was living in Prescott at the time. Callaway paid for the El Camino with a check, which later proved to be hot. By the time this was discovered, he had left town, allegedly taking property belonging to his landlord and a neighbor with him. The information on Callaway was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer system as him being wanted for theft of property and violation of the Arkansas hot check law. He was picked up in Hardin County, KY, where he was stopped for suspicion of driving while intoxicated. A check made by the Kentucky officer turned up the Arkansas warrant, and an arrest was made. Callaway is currently serving 30 days for DWI in Hardin County and will be returned to Nevada County where he will be charged with theft of property and violation of the hot check law. Glass made arrangements to get his vehicle back from Kentucky, and now has the truck in his possession. FORGERY ARREST Gary W. Hopson, 40, of Prescott, has been arrested and charged with two counts of forgery. According to Westmoreland, when Hopson learned the NCSO was looking for him, he called and made arrangements to come in. Westmoreland arrested him on two counts of second degree forgery after Hopson allegedly cashed two forged checks, one at Taylor's Big Star Grocery and the other at the Redi Mart on 67. Hopson was also wanted in Arkadelphia for contempt of court in a separate case in Clark County. He was picked up by the Arkadelphia Police and will be returned to Nevada County once the situation in Clark County is cleared up. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
