Reading Workshop Held

Officers of Southwest Arkansas Reading Council attended an Arkansas Reading Association (ARA) leadership workshop on July 16 and 17 at Lake Hamilton Resort in Hot Springs.

Attending the workshop were Ann Averitt, president Southwest Arkansas Educational Cooperative in Hope; Marsha Wilcox, vice president Reading Recovery teacher from Lewisville, and Rita Byers, secretary and teacher at Nevada Schools.

Approximately 100 local reading council leaders from across Arkansas attended the workshop. Sessions focused on program promotion, leadership skill training, networking and local literacy projects.

The Arkansas Reading Association is a 1,900-member organization dedicated to promoting literacy throughout the state. ARA is an affiliate of the International Reading Association. Twenty-one local councils throughout the state support area educators, parents and others through local programs and special projects.

Southwest Council received second place recognition for membership growth last year. The group was awarded with a certificate and $50 for council programs.
