Children's Theatre Hails Underground RR HeroinePublished Wednesday, January 1, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesThe Children's Theatre celebrates black history with a tribute to the American heroine, Harriet Tubman, in its production of Thomas W. Olson's Harriet Tubman: A Glory Over Everything , January 3 through 19. Born a slave, Tubman was known as the "Moses of her people" because she led hundreds of slaves to freedom. Tubman made 19 brave runs via the Underground Railroad, an organized system of escape for slaves to reach safety in the north and in Canada. Later in life, she proudly recalled, "I never ran my train off the track, and I never lost a passenger." This couragaeous `conductor' stands as a beacon of hope, courage and compassion for children and adults of all cultures. The role of Harriet Tubman is played by Lakeetra Dwionn Gilbert. Paula Isbel plays the roles of Lizabeth and Mary, and G. Scotty Spence appears as Henry, Ben and John. This production is directed by Alan Keith Smith. Performances for Harriet Tubman: A Glory Over Everything are at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and 2:00 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets for each production are $7.50 for adults and $6.50 for children age 12 and under. Arkansas Arts Center members receive a discount of $1.40 per ticket.
