Capps Awarded Job

Col. James A. Capps, Jr. has been named Commander of the 45th Medical Operations Squadron at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida.

The assumption of command ceremony took place December 19 at the base.

Col. Capps was born in Prescott in 1940, but grew up in Gurdon.

He attended the University of Arkansas, obtaining his bachelor of science in medicine and his M.D. in June 1965. He completed his general practice residency at University Hospital in Little Rock in 1968, where he received the Mead Johnson Award for post graduate training.

His militarty experience includes AFROTC for two years at the University of Arkansas; U.S. Navy from 1968 to 1970, stationed in Morocco; U.S. Navy Reserves from 1970 to 1976; Arkansas Air National Guard from 1978 to 1989; and the U.S. Air Force from 1989 to present, serving as Chief Aeromedical Services at Eacker Air Force Base near Blytheville; and as Chief Aerospace Medicine Spuadron Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.

Col. Capps' medical experience, in addition to active duty, includes group private practice in Springdale from July 1970 to September 1976 and solo private practice from October 1976 to January 1989.

His practice included obstetrics, surgery and geriatric medicine. He served as chief of staff of Springdale Memorial Hospital in 1976 and was boarded in family practice in 1976. He is licensed in the state for the practice of medicine and surgery.

His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Force Commendation medal with one oak leaf cluster. He is a life member of the Aerospace Medical Association, Association of Melitary Surgeons and the Alliance of Air National Gurard Flight Surgeons.

Col. Capps is married to the former Judy Ann Sammons of Russellville. They have four children, three of which are married and one who is attending the University of Arkansas. Col. Capps is a private pilot with over 1,000 hours and is a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Capps of Gurdon.
