1996 Football Squad Nearly Makes It Back To Finals To Face Nashville

Published Wednesday, January 1, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

There was hope for a second consecutive state championship by the Curley Wolf football team when the '96 season began.

Eddie Jackson had returned several players from the 1995 championship team, with the exception of signalcaller Barrett Yates and All- State back Courtney Bryant.

And, things looked good early on for the Wolves as they opened with an impressive win over Ashdown, which was changed to a 2-0 loss due to an ineligible player.

From there, however, the Wolves feasted on all opposition, ripping though arch-rival Hope 25-12, blanking Gurdon 14-0 in a storm- shortened game and routing Bismarck 32-0.

This took the Wolves to Nashville for their annual date with the Scrappers, the eventual state champs in 96. Nashville handed the Wolves their first actual loss on the field 32-21 as Jarrod McBride passed the Scrappers to the win.

Undaunted, the Wolves rallied on Oct. 11 to pound the De Queen Leopards 31-13 and tear through Fountain Lake 27-7, before going to Junction City and posting a 35-0 shutout.

After Junction City, the Wolves cleaned house in Fouke with a 33-8 win over the Panthers. From there, they squashed the Fordyce Redbugs 12-0 to end regular season play and prepare for the playoffs.

The Wolves opened post-season play at home with an 18-6 win over Gosnell.

But it was time for Prescott to get on the road again as the Wolves headed to McGehee, where they posted a 34-12 win and came back home to host Atkins in a Nov. 22 game.

Atkins' Red Devils were Prescott's final victims of the year as they went down 31-13, earning the Wolves a date with Osceola as well as another extended road trip.

The Seminoles were able to open December by feasting on Wolf turnovers in posting a 12-6 win over Prescott and earning their shot against Nashville in the title game.

Prescott had its chances in the contest against the Seminoles, though, but lost the ball five times in the red zone.
