Nevada Teams WinBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, January 8, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune Nevada took two games in the opening round of play in the Southwest Arkansas Invitational Tournament in Saratoga. The BlueJays edged Bright Star 61-58, while the Lady Jays nipped Blevins 53-52. Nevada's boys led three of the four periods played, including the most important one -- the fourth. The Jays took a 14-12 lead in the first, and were up 24-23 at the break. Bright Star responded in the third as they went ahead 43-40, only to see the Jays fight back for the win. Joseph Young took control of the Jay offense as he played string music for 20 points. Julius Gulley helped out with 15 of his own. Ricardo Young and Eric Murphy fouled out in the fourth period after scoring two and seven points respectively. The Jays canned 14 of 21 free throws, while Bright Star's Tigers were 18 of 31 at the line. The Tigers were led by John Larry, who had 22 in the game. Corey Shepard Jr. added 15 in the loss LADY JAYS 53 LADY HORNETS 52 It took everything the Lady Jays had to give in order for them to slip by Blevins 53-52 in Saturday's first round win in the Saratoga tourney. In fact, the Lady Jays had to battle from behind after trailing for three fourths of the game. The Lady Hornets started well with a 16-12 lead after one. They went to the locker room with a 30-23 advantage at the half. The Lady Jays battled back in the third period, outscoring Blevins 18-13, but still trailed 43-41. Dilesha Easter led the way for the Nevada win with 18 points. Ramona Evans smoked the net for 16 of her own. Jennifer White paced Blevins with 17, while Kyesia Jordan netted 12 and Kyla Sweat added 10. Neither team was exemplary at the free throw line as Nevada converted only five of 21 and Blevins was a woeful four of 16. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
