Girls Lose In Finals Of Home TournamentBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, January 8, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune Cecily Butler's Wolverettes have been on a tear of late. Overall, the Prescott senior girls are boasting a 10-2 record, with their second loss coming against Lakeside in the Prescott Classic Dec. 28. However, the Wolverettes opened 1997 with a pair of victories, one against a league foe and the other in the Southwest Arkansas Invitational Tournament in Saratoga. PRESCOTT 57 GENOA 27 The Wolverettes took to the court against the Lady Dragons of Genoa Central in the first round of the Southwest Arkansas Invitational Saturday, Jan. 4. After the first eight minutes, the contest ended for all practical purposes. The Lady Dragons raced to a 9-2 lead early in the first quarter, forcing Butler to call a time out. Once the Wolverettes returned to the hardwood, the Lady Dragons had their jets cooled, as Prescott rallied to a 17-13 lead. Genoa's coach was slapped with two indirect technical fouls in the opening eight minutes -- one for not having one of his players listed on the roster and the other for having six players on the court at once. A third T would have seen him ejected and having to sit out the next two contests. On the second technical, the officials had Leslie Hines line up on Genoa's free throw line to shoot the two shots. However, the Prescott fans in the bleachers yelled to the zebras, pointing out the mistake. After the bugs were worked out during the first quarter, the Wolverettes went in for the kill. Defensively, Prescott allowed only two points in the second frame, while sending 19 through the cords. At the half, Prescott had the game in hand 36-15. The slaughter continued in the third frame as the Wolverette offense was unstoppable and the defense was impenetrable. When the buzzer sounded ending the third segment, Prescott held a 52-18 advantage. Butler cleared her bench, making sure everyone saw action. The Wolverettes converted 13 of 21 from the charity stripe, while Genoa netted six of 11. Stacy Stockton led the Wolverettes with 13 points and five rebounds, while Laura Culpepper added a dozen points and pulled down six boards. Leslie Hines poured in 11 points, while Gladies Gulley ripped the cords for 10, and had five rebounds. Jessica Hildebrand added four assists to her stats. L. Green led Genoa with nine points. PRESCOTT 58 BISMARCK 40 The Wolverettes tuned up for the Saratoga tourney with a win over league foe Bismarck Friday, Jan. 3. Prescott dominated all phases of the game in posting a 58-40 win and staying undefeated in 7AA play at 3-0. A solid performance throughout kept the Lady Lions at bay, as Prescott opened with a 16-9 first quarter lead and held a 34-19 halftime advantage. The Wolverettes poured more salt into the Bismarck wound in the third period with the score 48-27. Prescott went to the line seven times, connecting on three shots. Bismarck was six of 15. Stockton put on a scoring show with 25 points, while Hines added 17 in an unusual offensive display for her. Hines also nailed a trio of three-pointers. Jessica Hildebrand had nine assists, while Culpepper added four steals, four assists and six rebounds to her charge. Gulley pulled down six boards as well. Jessica Wooten led Bismarck with 14 points. PRESCOTT 56 LAKESIDE 57 It wasn't anything the Lady Rams did so well that allowed them the 57-56 overtime win against Prescott in the Dec. 28 Prescott Classic, as it was what the Wolverettes didn't do. Lakeside opened with a 19-12 lead, only to see the score tied 28-28 at the half. The two squads stood toe-to-toe in the third and fourth periods as neither could do what it took to post a regulation time victory. The game was knotted 41-41 after three and 53-53 at the end of regulation. In the overtime period, the Lady Rams missed 10 free throws, but still pulled out the win after a mental mistake was made by Prescott, after the Wolverettes had pulled to a 56-55 lead with about 30 seconds to go and were again in possession of the ball. However, the Wolverettes turned the ball over, allowing Lakeside to score the go-ahead and winning basket. Prescott netted 12 of 20 free throws, while Lakeside was a pitiful 13 of 35 from the stripe. Gulley scored 18 points, while Stockton added 17, with six boards. Culpepper sent 12 points through the net and pulled down 10 rebounds. Hines had five rebounds and six assists, but played a solid defensive game. Tanya Cenac led all scorers with 21 for Lakeside. PRESCOTT 61 SMACKOVER 28 In the opening game of the Prescott Classic, the Wolverettes feasted on the Lady Buckaroos of Smackover 61-28. There was absolutely nothing the Lady Bucks could do to stop anything Prescott tried. The Lady Bucks were shorter, slower and found themselves to be dinner as the Wolverettes showed what they could do. Scoring went as follows: 18-3 after one; 33-10 at the half; and 47-24 at the end of three. Nothing more needs to be said. The Wolverettes were two of four at the line, while Smackover was seven of 11. Gulley led Prescott with 18, with Culpepper adding 14. Stockton scored 11 in the game. Hildebrand dished six assists, while Hines dove inside for seven boards. Culpepper led in rebounding with 11. Tisha Floyd led Smackover with 11 points. PRESCOTT 70 FOUNTAIN LAKE 41 Making the trip to Fountain Lake on Dec. 20 proved to be little more than a practice game for the Wolverettes, as they demolished the Lady Cobras 70-41. Butler's bench saw plenty of action in this conference game as well. The game opened with Prescott taking a 27-9 lead, pushing it to a 42-21 halftime margin. By the end of the third quarter, the Wolverettes were in command 46-33. Prescott shot well at the charity stripe as they hit 13 of 17 attempts. The Lady Cobras were three of four. Stockton led the snake-killing attack with 25 points and three steals. She was seven of nine at the stripe. Hildebrand was hot as she sank 17 points, while dishing out six assists. Culpepper scored 14 points, had nine boards and seven assists. She was also perfect at the line, going 4-4. Hines scored nine, while Amber Arney had four and Melissa Beavert added one. Felicia Johnson led the Lady Cobras with 16. The Wolverettes, 10-2 on the season, have a 7:20 date tonight with Nashville in the second round of the Saratoga tourney.
