Curley Wolves On Win Streak

There's nothing more satisfying than beating your old alma mater.

This is exactly what Hal Landrith and the Prescott Curley Wolves did during their final game in the Prescott Classic on Dec. 28.

The Wolves whipped the Rams 56-43 to bring their season record to 5-4. The team is 2-1 in 7-AA play.

Prescott opened with a 9-4 lead after eight minutes of play, stretching this to a 24-17 halftime advantage.

Landrith had his Wolves primed for the win as they played a tenacious defense and took advantage of their scoring opportunities.

At the end of three, the Wolves were in command 36-25.

C.D. Flemons paced the Wolves with 24 points as he hit six of 14 from the field and converted 12 of 20 from the free throw line.

Rashad Johnson scored nine points for Prescott, netting four of six shots and a free throw.

The Wolves netted 22 of 39 from the charity stripe, while Lakeside hit 13 of 22.

The Rams fired long-range bombs in the game, but were a woeful two of 18, while the Wolves were two of six in three-point shots.

Prescott dominated the boards offensively by pulling down 16 rebounds and allowing eight. Overall, the Wolves cleared the glass for 35 rebounds, giving up 26 boards.

There were eight steals for Prescott, with Brandon Wilson swiping two and Johnson taking three. The Wolves turned the ball over 11 times, but forced 15 by the Rams.

BISMARCK 42

The Wolves posted their second straight conference win with a 46-42 victory over the Bismarck Lions Friday, Jan. 1, 1997.

Neither team started well, as a total of 13 points were scored in the opening eight minutes. When the buzzer ended the inaugural frame, the Wolves led 8-5.

The Lions, however, didn't roll over and play dead. They came back in the second to cut the score to 19-17 at the half, and took the lead 33-30 at the end of three.

This woke the Wolves up as they rallied in the final stanza to post the win.

Flemons was held to 16 points in the game, while Wilson stepped up and added 10 in the victory.

Prescott connected on three of 19 from the charity stripe, while the Lions were red hot in netting 11 of 15 from the line.

However, the Wolves were able to overcome their poor free throw shooting, by netting 48.8 percent of their shots from the field. They were 20 of 41 overall, while Bismarck shot 44 percent at 11 of 25.

Again, the Wolves dominated the offensive boards as they ripped down 11 and allowed four. For the game, Prescott pulled down 27 rebounds to Bismarck's 19.

And, again, Prescott forced more turnovers than it made at 18-13. The Wolves also played cat burglar against the Lions with 13 steals, while having none themselves.

SPRING HILL 37

Prescott's opening game in the Prescott Classic, played during the Christmas holidays, was little more than a practice game as they humiliated Spring Hill 70-37.

The Wolves showed no mercy to the smaller and slower Bears as the players pretty much did what they wanted.

Spring Hill simply didn't have what it took to stay in the game, which ended early, for all intents and purposes.

The Wolves opened with a 21-10 first period lead, extending it to a 44-24 halftime advantage.

Landrith made sure all members of the squad got in some playing time as he cleared the bench during the second half.

By the end of the third quarter, Prescott held a commanding 56-33 lead and cruised to the win.

Flemons and Morrow scored 17 each, while Haynie added eight. Morrow connected on three of five from downtown.

The Wolves were 10 of 21 from the charity stripe, while Spring Hill was nine of 18 at the line.

When it came to offensive rebounds, the Wolves again dominated as they pulled down 20 and gave up eight. Overall, Prescott outrebounded the Bears 38-21.

The song remains the same when it comes to steals and turnovers, as the Wolves force more than they commit. The Wolves recorded 14 steals, giving up five, and had 11 turnovers, while the Bears coughed the ball up 20 times.

FOUNTAIN LAKE 51

Fountain Lake's Cobras were stung by the Wolves in the final regular game played before the Christmas holidays, as Prescott edged them 54-51 on Dec. 20.

It took a strong second period for Prescott to pull off the win, however.

The game opened with the Cobras taking a 13-11 first quarter lead. The Wolves responded in the second period by going ahead 29- 25.

From there, the war raged as both teams battled back and forth, with neither able to put the other away. At the end of three, the Wolves remained ahead 43-39 and held on for the win.

Flemons again had the hot hand for the Wolves as he poured in 19 points. Haynie did his part by ripping the nylon for 15.

Prescott shot five of 11 from the line, while the Cobras netted 13 of 20. Free throws and rebounding kept Fountain Lake in the contest.

The Cobras whipped the Wolves on the board by pulling down 53 to Prescott's 29.

Prescott will venture into tournament action Thursday night when the Wolves tangle with ever-tough Mineral Springs.

Tipoff time is set for 7:20 in the Southwest Arkansas Invitational Tournament in Saratoga.
