Carlos Welch of Prescott is enlisted in the U.S. Navy and is aboard the USS Kitty Hawk CV-63 stationed in Yokosoka, Japan. Since going to Japan he tried out for a Navy basketball team and made it. He led the team to a 18-2 record and led the team in scoring with 25 ppg and assists with 5.0 apg.

Recently the ship was deployed to the Persian Gulf to help in Operation Southern Watch. During this time he participated in several tournaments with his team and led them with 24.4 ppg, 5.5 apg and 2bpg which finished 3rd. The team is scheduled to play tournaments in Australia and Thialand. We wanted to congratulate Mr. Welch on his great effort at work and on the court.

Army Pfc. Miles E. Gosvenor has arrived at Fort Benning near Columbus, Ga., to complete basic military training.

During the training the soldier will receive instruction in drill and ceremonies, map reading, tactics, military customs and courtesies, physical fitness and first aid.

Gosvenor is the son of Patsy M. Littrell of Cale.

Army National Guard Spec. Marc R. Gresham has deployed to Eskan Village in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as a member of the Arkansas Army National Guard Unit Task Force, Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 153rd Infantry.

The task force replaces the 82nd Airborne Division, which serves as a security force for Patriot missile sites. The missile sites are part of the Army Forces Central Command in Saudi Arabia and are operated by troops participating in Operation Desert Focus.

Gresham, an infantryman, is the son of Bob R. Gresham of Rosston and Rita L. Phillips of Magnolia.

His wife, Stephanie, is the daughter of Stuart and Patricia Miller of Waldo.

The specialist is a 1998 graduate of Magnolia High School.
