Squads Earn HonorsPublished Wednesday, January 15, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesOnce more the Gurdon cheerleading squads did an outstanding job in November in competition at El Dorado. Both, the Gurdon senior and junior cheerleading squads came in first in the ACCA (Arkansas Cheerleading Coaches Association) regional 7A competition. Because of their performance, the senior group was qualified to participate in state competition at Beebe November 16, where they came in second in the state. Due to an injury of one of the cheerleaders, it was questionable whether the team would go to state, but after much discussion the decision was made. Cindy Duke, the senior squad's sponsor, said it was only because of their hard work and determination that these girls overcame their handicap. She had a lot of praise for the group, saying both squads are outstanding. This was the first time a senior squad from Gurdon has placed in state competition. Seven out of 12 members of the senior group were on the squad which ranked seventh internationally in Nashville, Tenn., at IOCC in 1993. Just as important, however, was the fact the junior squad was also invited to attend state because of their outstanding performance at regional -- even though there is no competition in the junior division on the state level. They were able to perform between other performances and came away very excited, according to Lea Purifoy, the junior squad's sponsor. "Gurdon can be proud of their cheerleading squads," Duke said. "No matter where they go they always represent our town and school to their very best ability. "Cheerleading is no longer is considered just for looks or popularity," Duke continued, "but a test of skill, strength, ability and stamina. These girls work hard year round and really appreciate your support." Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
