Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, January 15, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesWell, we are back in school after a wonderful vacation. When we arrived at school Thursday, January 2, we thought we were in the wrong building. We had a very pleasant surprise, as the hall floors just seemed to shine. The floors had a bright new wax job and they looked simply beautiful. Several teachers mentioned it seemed as though we should be ice skating on it, but of course we knew better than that. We just wanted to keep it nice and shiney so we decided to not allow the students to come in. Now, you know I am teasing about that! Of course the students came in and we quickly got back into the routine of things. However, the following Monday, we kept thinking that each day we would not be able to attend school due to the forecast of snow. But we were able to complete a full week of school. Several of the students are "coughing and blowing," but they still attend their classes. Speaking of classes, we have started a new semester and class changes have been made. Not every student had a class change, but every class for the seventh and eighth grades seems to have experienced a change in students. The GMS Student Council will sponsor the Nolan Richardson's Basketball shoot-out Thursday, January 16. Students who take part in this will have sponsors that pledge so much money per basket that particular individual makes. All the money made goes to the Easter Seals, as this is not a fund raiser for the Student Council. They just sponsor this to give the students the opportunity to win some nice prizes such as autographed Razorback basketballs, a trip to Bud Walton to sit on the bench with the Razorbacks, jackets, shirts and other items. Anyone participating can stand at any location on the court and shoot the ball for three minutes to see how many shots they can make. It is a lot of fun and competition for them. On January 29, the Student Council will sponsor a program of `Creative Athletics.' A guest will provide an entertaining program of how various sports can be used to motivate the students in their class work as well as getting along better with other students. We are excited about this program. The admission is $1 for each performance. Two performances will be held. Gurdon Primary students will be able to see if first at 9:00 with the second performance beginning about 10:00 for PMS students. So come and join either time and enjoy the fun, as several students will be asked to "help" out on stage. While at his home just before we were out of school for the holidays. Patrick Haynie had an accident that required surgery on his big toe. Patrick missed several days of school, but we are glad to have him back, although he has a limp as the toe is still in the process of healing. Be careful, Patrick. The second period seventh grade social studies students had a big package from their `trucker buddy' as Mark had sent them 28 post cards, and about 50 pamphlets. To their surprise, he also sent them key rings and pencils from the Marten Trucking Company that he drives for. They enjoy Mark so much and are very anxious for him to come back to visit with them. They hope he can bring the truck next time. We have missed the company of Mrs. Gattis for a whole week. She is having some back problems. We want her to hurry up and get better and come back "home" to us, as We miss you, Mrs. Gattis. As always, you are welcome to come by for a visit and watch us as we stay busy making classy moments at GMS. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
