Nevada Board Meets; Lauds Work During Cold WeatherBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, January 22, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune Nevada School Superintendent Rick McAffee had his contract extended for another year. However, McAffee wasn't present at the Nevada School Board meeting when his contract was extended. Instead, he was working with the school's PTO organization. This meeting coincided with the school board's. In other business conducted during the abbreviated meeting, Jim Cross and the administration were lauded by the board for their handling of the recent weather situation. Board President Davis Benton said they didn't jump the gun and close the school based on early weather reports, but waited to see what would happen before making any decisions. Cross, he said, got up at 4 and 5 a.m. to check the weather conditions, as well as the roads, making sure they were safe for buses to drive over. Because of this work, Nevada Schools were only out one day, and this because of a power outage when frozen limbs fell on power lines. Weather, though, has been a factor in getting the school's kitchen roof repaired. Cross said he has spoken with the contractor, who get to Nevada as soon as they can work it into their schedules. According to Cross, this is warranty work to get the roof back up to specifications. Bob Wright, of Texarkana, is the contractor. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
