"Under Pressure" Is New Art ExhibitPublished Wednesday, January 22, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesThe Arkansas Artists Registry has begun an exhibition of prints titled `Under Pressure,' according to James E. Mitchell, executive director of the Arkansas Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage. The Registry gallery is located on the first floor of the Tower Building at 323 Center in Little Rock. gallery hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free. `Under Pressure' will remain on view through February 28. `Under Pressure' features the recent works of 19 printmakers from cross the state of Arkansas, including Marian Shuff of Arkadelphia. According to Caroline Brown of the Artists Registry, the concept of using prints artistically began in China in the eighth century. Today, printmaking encompasses a wide range of visual and technical possibilities including lithographs, etchings, collagrapha, woodcuts and monotypes. The one thing these techniques have in common is the transfer of the image from one surface to another. New technologies vie with primitive techniques to define the future of the medium. Brown states that a small but growing number of artists are printing directly from computers, completely sidestepping the physical process of transferring images to paper. Those artists involved in this process believe it is opening a vast new potential for the printmaking medium. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
