J. Ed SmithPublished Wednesday, January 29, 1997 in the Nevada County PicayuneJ. Ed Smith, 88, of Hot Springs died Friday, January 24, 1997, at National Park Medical Center in Hot Springs. Born January 23, 1909, in Wickes, he was the son of Alex and Daisey Chapman Smith. Mr. Smith was an educator and served as superintendent of Prescott and Okolona school districts for over 40 years. He was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church of Hot Springs, formerly a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Prescott. He was past district governor of Rotary and a Paul Harris Fellow when he was a member of Prescott Rotary Club. Survivors include his wife, Pet Joplin Smith of Hot Springs; one daugther, Claudette Smith Ford of Hot Springs; two brothers, Ernest Smith of Houston, Texas, and Earl Smith of Santa Rosa, Calif.; one sister, Annie Spikes of Ft. Worth, Texas; two grandsons; and three great grandsons. Services were held Monday, January 27, at the Murry-Ruggles Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Jimmie Lancaster officiating. Entombment was in the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Hot Springs. Memorials may be made to Westminister Presbyterian Church of Hot Springs or the First United Methodist Church of Prescott.
