Stamps Senior Teams Handle Nevada SquadsBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, January 29, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune Having Stamps visit proved to be a mistake by the Nevada BlueJays as they concluded a busy week on the hardwood, Thursday, Jan. 23. The Yellowjackets were able to return to Stamps with two wins out of three games. In fact, the Jays lost both senior games, while the junior girls were able to record the lone victory for the home team. NEVADA 43 STAMPS 48 The Jays had no answer to Stamps' 6-8 center, Kelvin Howell, nor could they stop Jason Nelson, who scored 22 in the game. The Jays played close during the first half, but trailed at the end of the first, 11-9, but led at the break 20-18. By the end of three, though, the Jackets were back in the lead, 34-28, and held on for the win. Joseph Young again led the Jays with 14 points. Casey Curtis was next with nine points. Nelson's 22 points for Stamps was aided by Howell's nine and another nine by Steven Dunbar. Free throws made a difference in the game as the Jays didn't see the charity stripe much, connecting on three of five shots, while their visitors spent a good deal of time at the line. Stamps converted 14 of 26. NEVADA 35 STAMPS 37 The Lady Jackets made just enough trips to the free throw line to insure a 37-35 win over the Lady Jays. Stamps netted 11 of 20 from the stripe, while Nevada converted six of 14. Otherwise, the two squads played an even ball game. This was literally true by the end of the first quarter as the teams were knotted at 8-8. However, the Lady Jackets managed to pull away somewhat in the second at 19-13. The six-point difference remained the case at the end of three with the score 29-23. Ramona Evans provided the bulk of the offense for Nevada as she scored 11 points. Dilesha Easter did her part offensively, as she stroked the nets for 11 as well. Makesha Baxter was potent for Stamps, pouring in 18 for the Lady Jackets. NEVADA 38 STAMPS 16 The night opened with promise for Nevada as the junior girls spanked Stamps 38-16. In fact, the Lady Jays scored as many points in the first quarter as Stamps did all night. By the end of one, the score was 16-2. Nevada didn't let up any in the second period, though Stamps was able to score more. The second stanza, in fact, was the Lady Jackets' best of the evening, but they still trailed 20-10 at the half. By the end of the third, the Lady Jays were in full command at 34-12, with the bench cleared in the final period. Shiheta Henry was too much for Stamps as she scored 14 points to lead all scorers. Pam Young followed with eight, while Jackie House added six. Kesiha Satterwhite and Evelyn Collum led Stamps with four each. Free throws made no difference in the game. Stamps missed its only shot from the free throw line, as did the Lady Jays. Nevada's junior teams will visit Hope Thursday, with tip off for the first game at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, the junior and senior boys, along with the senior girls, will play host to one of the new kids on the block -- Gurdon.
