Nevada Takes Three GamesBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, January 29, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune Genoa Central's Dragons had their jets cooled in a trio of games against Nevada, Tuesday, Jan. 21. The senior boys walloped the Dragons 58-49 in their contest, though the BlueJays got off to a slow start. Genoa opened by taking a 12-8 lead in the first period and held a slim 27-26 halftime advantage. After the break, however, the Jay's offense showed up. Nevada took a 46-38 lead at the end of three and went on to the nine point win. Julius Gulley had the hot hand for the Jays as he poured in 12 points. The duo of Ricardo Young and Joseph Young canned 10 each. The Dragons were led by W. Douglas with a game-high 15. Both squads shot about 50 percent from the charity stripe. Nevada converted an even seven of 14, while Genoa hit 11 of 23. NEVADA 39 GENOA 28 The middle game of the night was no better than the other two as the Lady Dragons was whitewashed 39-28 by the Lady Jays. Genoa's team never led at the end of any period during the battle. Nevada jumped out to a thin 9-8 lead after one, and was up 19-16 at the half. The Lady Jays pushed their lead to nine points in the third at 29-20. Ramona Evans was unstoppable for Nevada as she ripped the nylons for 22 points on the night. Dilesha Easter was next with seven, while Shonda Young netted six. Lyndy Green led Genoa with 12 for the game. Free throw shooting was about the same for both teams as the Lady Jays were five of eight from the stripe, while Genoa was four of nine. NEVADA 32 GENOA 28 Genoa's losing streak began with the Nevada junior girls posting a 32-28 victory in the opening game of the evening. The Lady Jays started slow, trailing for three fourths of the contest. Genoa led 10-8 at the end of the first period of play, and were in command 20-10 when the buzzer sounded ending the first half of play. However, a solid halftime pep talk seemed to revive Nevada's combative spirits as they cut into the Genoa lead in the third period, trailing 26-21 as it ended, before rallying in the final quarter for the victory. Shiheta Henry had the hot hand for Nevada as she nailed 14 points. Alexis Madison wasn't far behind as she contributed 10 in the win. The Lady Dragons were led by Jenifer Anderson's 10 points. Free throws didn't come into play during the game as Genoa hit both of the ones they shot, and Nevada was two of six from the line. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
