Late Free Throws Give PMS Cubbettes Victory Over FordyceBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 5, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott's junior girls won a nailbiter against Fordyce, Tuesday, Feb. 28, winning 27-26. The two squads battled to an 11-11 tie at the end of one, before the Cubettes were able to pull away at the half, 19-15. By the end of three, the Lady 'Bugs had fought back to cut Prescott's lead to one at 22-21. With less than a minute remaining in the game, the Cubettes were leading by one. However, a foul was committed by a Prescott player while one of the Lady 'Bugs was attempting a three-point shot. This sent them to the line with three chances to score with no one in their face. The first shot was no good, but the next two found nothing but the bottom of the net. This gave Fordyce a 26-25 lead. The Lady 'Bugs pressed Prescott on the in-bounds play and were able to steal the ball. But, they missed their shot, with Sunshine Kelley pulling down the rebound and getting fouled. At the time, the Cubettes were in a one-and-one situation, putting pressure on Kelley to hit the first shot or possibly see the game go to Fordyce. The Lady 'Bugs called for a time out, which gave Prescott Coach Cecily Butler time to talk to her charges about their options. The discussion was short and only concerned what to do after Kelley hit both free throws. There was no talk of her missing. Their options were to avoid fouling at all costs. As Kelley stepped to the line, nine seconds showed on the game clock. The first free throw was perfect, putting the game in a tie at 26- 26. The second followed the example set by the first shot and found the bottom of the net giving Prescott a slim 27-26 lead. The Lady 'Bugs not only got the ball down the court, but were able to get off two errant shots before the buzzer ended the game with the Cubettes ahead. Traci Graham paced the Cubettes with a dozen points, including one trey, six rebounds and four assists. Doneshia Williamson netted 11 points, with a trio of three-pointers. Crystal Hall, who stood about 6-feet tall, led Fordyce with 12. The Cubettes were able nail five of eight free throws, while Fordyce was two of five from the stripe. For the year, Butler's freshman team has been deadly from three-point land. The Cubettes are shooting an astonishing 48.9 percent as a team from beyond the arc, and are netting 41.7 percent from inside the perimeter. PRESCOTT 7 HOPE 18 The eighth grade Cubettes had a tough time against the Lady Kittens of Hope Saturday, Feb. 1, as they fell 18-7. The Cubettes were unable to score in the first half, while the Lady Kittens had five in the first and four in the second periods. Bridgette Peters led Prescott with four, while Tiffany Smith netted two and Katrina Sorrells had one. Hale led all scorers with eight for Hope. Butler has moved members of the seventh grade team to the eighth grade squad to give them more experience on the court. In fact, the eighth grade team has eight eighth graders and eight seventh graders. Peters, a seventh grader, is the leading scorer for the eighth grade team with 19 points on the year. She is followed by Smith, another seventh grader, with 13. Trenace Hardman, an eighth grade player, also has 13, while Lesley Woods, 7th grade, has 10.
