Wolverettes Now 20-3 On SeasonBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 5, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott's Wolverettes are now 20-3 on the season, looking for their second trip in a row to the state playoffs. First, however, they must play their way through the district and regional tournaments. This year's district tourney will be played in Nashville, while the regional is set for Fordyce. Star City and Drew Central, teams playing in the 8AA, are looking to get even with Prescott for last year's losses. The Wolverettes, though, kept their winning ways going last week with wins over Fordyce and Fountain Lake to go 10-0 in 7AA action. PRESCOTT 59 FORDYCE 39 Tuesday, Jan. 28, the Wolverettes hammered the Lady Redbugs of Fordyce 59-39. While the first period was close, the Wolverettes were clearly the dominant team, though the score at the end of one was 12-10. This rapidly changes in the second quarter as Prescott's pressure forced turnover after turnover, with these turned into easy baskets. By halftime, the Wolverettes were in command 30-13. Coach Cecily Butler began substituting heavily in the second half, making sure almost everyone on the squad saw some playing time. Still, the Prescott crew maintained its lead, stretching its advantage to 45-23 when the buzzer ended the third frame. Fordyce managed to win the final eight minutes 16-11, but it was another case of too little, too late for the visiting Lady 'Bugs. Gladies Gulley had an easy night as she poured in 22 points from point blank range for the most part. Jessica Hildebrand contributed 15, mostly on layups after turnovers. Leslie Hines kept her three-point streak alive, stretching it to 12 consecutive games. Rein led Fordyce with 11 points. The only bad spot for Prescott came at the free throw line, where the Wolverettes shot less than 50 percent as they converted only nine of 22 attempts. The Lady 'Bugs were no better as they hit two of six. Gulley pulled down 14 rebounds, while Laura Culpepper cleared the glass 12 times. Hildebrand recorded five steals in the contest. PRESCOTT 69 FOUNTAIN LAKE 38 Fountain Lake's Lady Cobras were little more than a warm-up against the Wolverettes Friday, Jan. 31, as Prescott ran rampant in a 69-38 victory, giving the girls their 20th win of the season. However, the down side to this game saw Hines' three-point streak of 12 consecutive games come to an end, as she was unable to hit from beyond the arc during the contest. Otherwise, it was another blowout for the Wolverettes. For all practical purposes, this event was over by halftime as the Prescott squad had scored more points than the Lady Cobras would for the entire game. The Wolverettes struck for a 26-8 lead in the first eight minutes of the game, and led 41-17 at intermission. Both teams scored 11 in the third quarter, with Prescott leading 52-28 as Butler substituted freely, again clearing the bench. Culpepper led the scoring attack with 18 points, while Gulley netted 14. Hildebrand and Stacy Stockton canned 11 each. Lakisha Stuckey scored four, with Kaci Ammons adding six. Mandy Cox and DeShawn Fellows scored two apiece, while Christy Martin had one. The Lady Cobras were led by Felicia Johnson's game high 19. The Wolverettes improved their free throw shooting, connecting on 15 of 23 attempts. The Lady Cobras also shot well from the stripe, 11-18. Culpepper also pulled down 16 rebounds, while Gulley snared eight. While Butler said the Fountain Lake game was fun, it really wasn't much of a test for the Wolverettes, who have dominated the conference to date. There are three games remaining for the Wolverettes in regular season games. They will enjoy Senior Night Friday, Feb. 7 when they host Nevada in non-conference action. Their final league game will be a road trip to DeQueen, Feb. 11, for a date with the Lady Leopards. This could prove to be a test for Prescott as the Wolverettes won the first meeting by almost 50 points. Prescott's regular season concludes with a short trip to Blevins on Valentine's Day, Friday, Feb. 14. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
