Prescott's Curley Wolf basketball team has been on a tear. In fact, the Wolves are second in the 7AA, a half game behind arch-rival Nashville.

The Wolves, 8-2 in conference action, are a pleasant surprise this season, as they are legitimate contenders for the district title.

In fact, if the Wolves continue playing as the have been of late, there's an excellent chance they could make a trip to the regional tournament in Fordyce Feb. 25-March 1. First, however, the must wind up as one of the top two in the district tourney, which will be played in Nashville Feb. 17-22.

The Wolves have won their last five consecutive games, losing only to Nashville on Jan. 17. The Wolves gained revenge on the Scrappers in their rematch, Jan. 18, with a resounding 49-34 victory.

Playing without their scoring leader, C.D. Flemons, the Wolves had a tough test as they hosted the Cobras Friday, Jan. 31.

But, showing what they are made of, the Wolves managed to decapitate the Cobras 61-55.

Rashad Johnson stepped up his game to fill Flemons' shoes for the night as he scored 16 to lead the Wolves' offensive attack.

Throughout the first half, the game was close. The Wolves managed leads of 13-10 after one and 25-21 at the half.

The squad managed to pull away a bit more in the third period at 39-31.

Along with Johnson's 16, Brandon Wilson added 15 and Scott Webb had nine.

Chris Pascoe led all scorers in the game with 17 for the Cobras. Clint Bryant and Jeremy East scored 11 each.

The Wolves picked up their free throw shooting as well, connecting on 20 of 34 from the charity stripe. Fountain Lake converted 11 of 22 in the game.

FORDYCE 46

In what may have been the most important game of the year for the Wolves, they were able to turn back previously undefeated Fordyce 57-46, on Jan. 28.

The Redbugs entered the game with a perfect league record, while the Wolves still had two conference blemishes. However, when the dust settled after the battle, the 'Bugs had been squashed.

The Wolves had problems figuring out how to score against the 'Bugs in the first period, as Fordyce managed a 15-9 lead.

The puzzle was solved by halftime as the Wolves had pulled ahead 28-22 and never looked back. Neither team, though, shot well in the third period as a total of eight points was scored during this eight-minute stretch of the game.

Flemons was hot offensively, as he played string music to the tune of 27 points. Carlos Haynie contributed well with 10.

Darrin Brazil led the 'Bugs with 13, while Roderick Harper scored 10.

Again, the Wolves shot free throws reasonably well, netting 16 of 27, while the 'Bugs went 0-5 from the line.

Flemons also ripped down eight rebounds, while Wilson dished out eight assists, and Johnson had six.

BISMARCK 43

The Lions found out what other teams had been experiencing against Prescott as they were overwhelmed 72-43.

While both squads played evenly in the first quarter, with the score 12-12 at the end, this was as close as the Lions would get.

By halftime, the Wolves had declawed Bismarck and led 26-18, pushing this to a 45-30 score at the end of three.

The Wolves have been exceptionally strong in the final period lately, and this game was no exception as they outscored the Lions 27- 13.

Flemons scorched the nets with 30 points to lead all scorers, while Jason Morrow ripped the cords for 13.

Weatherford paced Bismarck with 15.

The Wolves were 10 of 20 from the stripe. Bismarck was three of five in free throw shooting.

Flemons pulled down seven of Prescott's 27 rebounds, while Wilson led the team with nine assists. Haynie had four steals and six assists to add to his stats.

FOUKE 32

Consistent scoring throughout the game allowed the Wolves to humble the Panthers 49-32 on Jan. 21, as Prescott's hot streak was getting underway.

The Wolves opened this contest with a 15-10 first period lead, building it to a 26-16 halftime advantage. By the end of three, the Wolves were in command 36-23, as the Prescott defense made life miserable for the Panthers.

Morrow led the way in this outing with 14 points. Flemons netted 12 with Wilson adding 10.

Mike Keith paced Fouke with 11.

The line wasn't as kind to the Wolves at it would later be, with them hitting only eight of 20. Fouke, though, was only two of nine.

NASHVILLE 34

Because of football season getting extended for both Prescott and Nashville, the basketball game scheduled for Nov. 22 was postponed until Jan. 18.

This meant the Wolves and Pumpkinheads would play one another twice on consecutive days at one another's home.

In the game played at Nashville, the Wolves posted a 49-34 win.

It took a strong second half by the Wolves to secure this win after Nashville had the early lead.

By the end of the opening eight minutes, the Scrappers were up 9-8. This was the identical amount of points both crews would score in the second frame, with the Pumpkinheads leading 18-16 at the break.

However, whatever Prescott Coach Hal Landrith told the team during halftime took effect in the third period.

The Wolf offense showed up, while the defense continued being extraordinarily stingy. Prescott outscored the home team 14-8 in the third to go up 30-26, and pounded the Scrappers 19-8 in the final stanza for the win.

Again, it took a balanced scoring attack with Flemons leading the way with 13. Morrow followed with 10, while Wilson and Haynie each contributed nine.

Jamie Erby led Nashville with 13.

The Wolves converted 13 of 22 free throw attempts, while Nashville was a pathetic three of 14 from the line.

NASHVILLE 42

This game could have gone either way, and was the last one the Wolves lost, as the Scrappers were able to edge Prescott 42-40 on Jan. 17.

The Wolves, in this game, lacked what has become a trademark strong finish, which allowed Nashville to escape with a victory.

Both teams opened slowly, 7-7, with Nashville getting a slight lead at the half, 25-23. From there, both teams scored 17 in the second half, as neither could establish dominance.

Morrow was the game's leading scorer with 14, while Flemons scored 11.

Jared McBride paced the Scrappers with 11. Erby had 10.

Both teams were woeful at the line in this contest. Prescott was three of 14, while Nashville was four of 11.

The Wolves step out of league play Friday when they entertain the Nevada BlueJays.

Of the remaining games the Wolves have left, only one is a conference battle. The Wolves will travel to DeQueen to face the Leopards Feb 11.

The regular season comes to an end with another short road trip to Blevins on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14.
