Jr. Go-Devils Prepare For District TournamentPublished Wednesday, February 12, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesGurdon's junior basketball players are finishing up the season this week, as district tournament play began Monday. Both junior teams were to have played Monday night at Stephens in the 7A Central District tournament. The junior Lady Go-Devils won nine games and lost seven for the regular season. They were seeded third going into the district tourney. The junior boys were seeded fourth after finishing the regular season with only three wins and having seven losses, according to coach John Ware. The boys were to have played at 6:10 Monday night and the girls were to have followed at around 7:20. Last week on Thursday the junior girls finished the regular season with a 31-22 win over Sparkman. Tiffany Ware pumped in 12 points for the winners and Vanessa Young added 10 more. These were the only players from either team scoring in double figures. Others scoring for Gurdon were Angela Walker with 4, Ebony Crow with 3 and Elisha Henry with 2. Nikki Harrison was high for Sparkman with 9 points. Gurdon led Sparkman 4-2 after one quarter, 14-9 at halftime and 26- 13 going into the final period. The junior Go-Devils also finished with a strong win, defeating the Sparkman junior boys, 46-39, in a game that was close all the way. Coby Pace and RayShun Hopson led Gurdon with 11 points apiece. However, the big scorer was Dominic Whitaker of Sparkman, who finished with 23 points. Others scoring for Gurdon were Josh Swinea and Sampson Kadiri with 7 points each, Cameron Rhinehart finished with 4 points, and Patrick Stone and Oliver Webster added 3 each.
