Go-Devils Take Two Wins As Season Winds Down

Published Wednesday, February 12, 1997 in the Gurdon Times

The Gurdon senior boys are finishing up the regular basketball season this week with two home games.

Tuesday they were to host Sparkman and this Friday they will host Dierks. Both are non-conference games.

The Go-Devils came in second in the 7A Central Conference with an 8-2 record. Their two losses came from Stamps and Nevada. Overall the Go-Devils have won 19 games while losing only six.

The senior district tournament will begin next Monday at Nevada. Gurdon will be top-seeded.

Because they are second in the 7A Central Conference, the Go-Devils are assured of a spot in the regional tournament, which will be held in Dierks following the district.

Next week in the district, they will not have to play until the semi-finals. In all, four teams from the league will advance.

GENOA CENTRAL 32

Gurdon finished conference play with a big 71-32 win over the Genoa Dragons at Gurdon on Tuesday of last week. The game was no contest as the Gurdon senior boys completely dominated the Dragons.

Gurdon led Genoa Central 17-8 after one period, 34-17 at halftime and had a commanding 55-25 lead going into the four quarter.

Ten players for the Go-Devils scored in the game with three of them getting in double figures.

Eric Hatley of Gurdon was the game's leading scorer with 13 points, five 2-pointers and one from 3-point range. He missed two free shots.

Corey Marsh and Terry Cornish followed Hatley with 11 points apiece. Marsh made five 2-pointers and 1 of 2 free throws. Cornish hit one from beyond the 3-point arc and four from within.

Others scoring for Gurdon were Adrian Meeks with 9 points; Antonio Gatlin with 8; Demond Beasley and Mitch Plyer with 6 points each; Marcus Wright with 3 and Josh Griffin and Sam Bell scored 2 points apiece.

No one from Genoa scored in double figures.

On the down side, Gurdon only made two of five from the free throw line. Genoa made 9 of 14. Free throw shooting could be very crucial in the upcoming tournaments.

BLEVINS HORNETS 57

Only in the second half were the Go-Devils able to go ahead of Blevins to stay. The final score was 66-57 in favor of Gurdon.

When the Go-Devils came back from intermission they hit three 3-pointers that put them ahead. In addition, coach John Ware made some defensive adjustments and the Hornets were not able to fast break as often as they did the first half.

Blevins led the Go-Devils after one quarter, 14-12, and 32-31 at halftime, but Gurdon held a 49-43 lead after three periods.

The fast break and the over-powering and powerful Nick McClure kept the Go-Devils at bay for two quarters. However, Gurdon pulled some fast breaks of their own, and was able to keep within distance, waiting for the right opportunity.

After going ahead the last half and with time running out, Coach Ware had his players to spread the ball. The control offense paid off as the Go-Devils put another victory under their belts.

McClure was the game's leading scorer with 28 points. He connected with 11 2-pointers and he made 6 of 7 free shots. Thomas Turner followed with 11 points for the losers, four 2-pointers and he was 3 out of 4 from the line.

Eric Hatley, once more, was Gurdon's leading scorer. He finished with seven 2-pointers, one 3-pointer and he made 3 of 5 from the stripe for 20 points.

Marcus Wright hit two from beyond the arc and two closer for 10 points for the Go-Devils.

Chauncey Charles scored 9 points for Gurdon; Adrian Meeks and Terry Cornish had 7 apiece; Demond Beasley and Josh Griffin finished with 4 each; Antonio Gatlin scored 3 and Eric Allen scored 2 points.

This time the Go-Devils made 7 of 10 from the free throw line. Blevins scored 15 of 24.
