For the sixth consecutive year, the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, and the Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas will sponsor the Preserve Our Past (P.O.P.) art and essay competition for Arkansas fifth graders, AHPP Director Cathy Slater announced February 7.

The theme of the competition, held in conjunction with National Historic Preservation Week and Arkansas Heritage Week, is `Heritage By Design.'

Fifth grade students across the state are asked to write essays of 250 words or less on a local historic property that is considered a community landmark or to draw a picture of such a landmark.

The Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas will award a $100 savings bond for the first place entry in both divisions and a $50 savings bond for second place entries.

Top entries, along with honorable mention winners, will be displayed at the State Capitol in Little Rock from May 5-20.

All entries must be postmarked no later than April 18, 1997.
